Does everyone have a drain after surgery?

Recommended Posts

This might seem like a silly question but... I have seen many posts about issues with incision at the "drain" site. Just wondering is having a drain a standard part of the rny surgery?

I had a RNY and did not have any drain. Although some people do have a drain port put in for a few days. Probably a good question for your surgeon.

No drain here. I think it depends on what your individual surgeon does. I did have an extra incision where a medicine ball was attached, though.

It is all about the surgeon. In the program I went through, only one of the 3 surgeons uses them (lucky me, I got the one who did).

Honestly I think that may have been the worst part of my surgery, but since it was only for a week I guess things could have been much worse.

I had rny and I had a Jp drain. It was taken out before I left the hospital. I also had a ng tube in place which apparently not all surgeons do, that was the worst thing ever

My surgeon told me he puts in a drain when necessary - usually for heavier patients. I had a drain for 4 days. It was supposed to be in for a week, but the tubing got plugged and it had to come out early. It was a bit of a pain to deal with, but not too bad overall.

No drain for me (RNY) or the 4 friends I have who had the same surgeon. Friends at another surgical office did have drains. They did not do a liquid diet pre-surg, which I have heard has a connection to the drains. Something about the size of the liver? I don't really know. They both hated the drains.

No drain here... I asked my surgeon beforehand and he said he only does it when necessary in extremely obese patients.

Good question to ask.

I had a drain for one week, it was really no big deal. No pain or discomfort associated with it. My surgeon puts one in every pt. with RNY.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
