KeeWee 470 Posted September 14, 2014 Just some info for severe reflux sufferers. I never knew acid reflux was so dangerous but now after weeks of choking in my sleep on gastric juices, my Dr. Did an endoscopy and found an ulcer and showed me the results of swelling and inflammation in my throat from the reflux. Its bad and if this Carafate doesn't clear it up my next step can be a full gastric bypass. I'm a sleeve pt for a reason...I DO NOT WANT THE BYPASS and now I may not have a choice. I wish I knew ahead of time the terrible results of severe GERD. Do your research!!
BitterSweet* 835 Posted September 14, 2014 Hope the carafate helps. That sucks.
docbree 199 Posted September 14, 2014 (edited) Oh my KeeWee. I am so sorry. I really hope they can control your reflux with medication. Will be thinking of you and wishing you well. Please keep us posted. (((Hugs))) Ps - You may want to do an internet search on the Linx procedure for gastric reflux - may be a long shot - but possibly an alternative to bypass if you can find a surgeon on your area who is certified and if your insurance will approve it. Don't know if they are doing it in sleeve patients or not. Edited September 14, 2014 by docbree

KeeWee 470 Posted September 16, 2014 . How are you now? What helped? I just started the Carafate this week but I have also began to sleep in my recliner and haven't had any overnight issues, seems the reflux has even lessened. Could be because I haven't eaten much also. I will keep u posted. Doc says give it a month to see the recovery.

KeeWee 470 Posted November 11, 2014 I am doing better, thanks guys. seems the meds worked but my issue is my surgeon's office refused to see me when I went for the follow up. They said, I need a new referral but never told me that when we made this appointment 3 months prior so I was not able to be seen. I feel better tho and I think i'm ready to go back to my doctors in my Kaiser network since the outside providers are so wishy washy.
KeeWee 470 Posted November 11, 2014 Did you have a endoscopy before your surgery? Yes, I did but it never showed anything abnormal I believe..

CowgirlJane 14,260 Posted December 11, 2014 That is great news. Moral of the story is to take GERD seriously. It is the major long term risk issue for sleevers.
