my surgery in two days - Sept. 16th

Recommended Posts

I am 66 and have about 200 lbs to lose. I am amazingly calm about the upcoming surgery. I am at 7:15 am have to be at the hospital at 5:00am. I am having robotic surgery. I am doing this with my son, who lives in Flordia he is scheduled for surgery in October. Some how I was able to get scheduled quicker even though he started the process before me. I look forward to discussion with you all through the next year. Best wishes.

dear one,

excited, I'm sure. and to take this adventure with your son! if my son was still alive, I would be doing this with him. he was a chiropractic physician and became very ill with diabetes and heart issues. then while playing old man hockey as it is called in Alaska, he broke his back. without being able to exercise, he passed away within a few months. I grieve his loss but know he is with the Lord and well.

I just know you and your son will enjoy taking this journey together. I am 4.5 months post op, roux-en y, and have lost 58 pounds. I am a slow loser, but at age 73 and unable to exercise and barely walk, I am feeling very spiffy! each day is a fun victory.

blessings,

Karen in the woods of Alaska

Karen, thank you so much for your note. I can't imagine the lost of a child and my sympathies are with you. Sounds like you are making significant progress that will eventually give you better mobility. I start having some mobilities issues this year. My son researched the surgey and called me and said that he thought I should do it. After researching it I agreed. even though he started the process before me I ended up getting everthing done and I am scheduled for the 16th he is scheduled for OCt. 20th.

Speaking of Alaska where do you live? I lived in Fairbanks and Juneau for 7.5 years. My sis lives in Alaska and is coming here Monday to be here for my surgery. She lives in sterling. Best. Vernellia

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
