2 Years Post-op and Freaking Out

Recommended Posts

This month marks my 2 years since surgery. I have lost 50% of my body weight since surgery and I am happy where I am at. My problem is...I am TERRIFIED of putting ANY weight back on. I think I am so concerned about it because if I tell someone I have had the surgery, they are like "oh, that's great, my so and so had that surgery but he/she gained all their weight back." I eat pretty good, no fast food, I don't drink alcohol, and I think on average I consume about 1,500 calories a day which I have been told I should be averaging about 800-1000 for being 2 year post op. I try to get 30 mins of walking in per day. I just don't know if I should have the fear of putting the weight back on or if I am over reacting. I step on the scale every day and I know that is not psychologically healthy. I need some guidance from someone that has had gastric bypass surgery and has successfully kept their weight off. This may be a stupid question, but do people that have had gastric bypass surgery put weight on faster than the average person with a similar diet? I really need a good mentor that can help me work through these clearly emotional issues I am having.

I am not at the 2 year mark yet from my RNY surgery. I have been told there is a third stage that occurs at about 1 1/2 year out where the stomach fully heals and goes from a 70% absorption of calories to 100%. This can drive weight gain if you are consuming too many calories. If that is the case, taking daily weight measurements can provide you an early indication. If it occurs, you might have to tighten up you caloric intake.

I am only 15 months out, but I totally relate. I am terrified of gaining weight. I have lost over 200 pounds and have a normal BMI for the first time in my life (I was overweight when I was only six months old). I have lost 95% of my excess weight. I weigh myself every morning and every night. I record everything that I eat in MyFitnessPal.com. So far I am successfully maintaining. I am eating about 1100 calories a day. I work out in some way every day, I walk, I belong to the YMCA and do a variety of classes, I lift weights. I wear a Fit Bit and strive for at least 10, 000 steps everyday.

They spend so much time teaching us how to lose weight, but nobody seems interested in teaching you how to maintain the loss once you get there. I really feel like I am on my own and just feeling my way. So far what I am doing is working, I am terrified of losing control or having my body suddenly change and suddenly gaining the weight back.

For now I am going to stay vigilant. I have days that I don't do as well as others. When I do, I just make sure the next day is better. Together we can figure this out!

Carol

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.

Neat you have a pic of this day! I was sooo happy to get my surgery. It was well worth it! And I'm not even near my goal. I had surgery Dec. 2!
