What kind/size band?

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone,

I'm new and still considering the band. I'm going to a seminar on May 10th. I've been reading and reading and reading these boards and getting so much out of them.

I've keep reading about people talk about the type of band and the size of the band they have. How is this determined? The Dr.'s preference? Or does it have something to do with the anatomy?

A lot of people also talk about how life changing this is, living with the band and the weight loss and how you feel about yourself. I was wondering, have a lot of people changed jobs, jobs that they were not happy in, now that they feel so much better and their lives have changed?

ps

Hello and welcome!!!

I haven't been banded yet so I cannot speak to the life changes, but I can tell you that yes, once the surgeon is in your abdominal cavity, s/he determines the size band that will be placed. It is based on the size/thickness of your stomach, etc. What I've gleaned from boards like these and going to a couple of different seminars, most surgeons have all the sizes they use [which in the US is currently 4: 9.75 cm (4 cc capacity); 10 cm (4cc capacity); 11 cm (9cc capacity); Vanguard (10cc) see this thread: http://www.lapbandtalk.com/showthread.php?t=15216] on hand and they decide what to use once you are prepped for installation.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
