I am new and a little scared...

Recommended Posts

Although I have prepared for the surgery: watched the films, went to meetings, had all my test completed, etc. I am still a little scared. I guess going under the knife is just scary. And when I read of some of the complications in the forums, it just makes me wonder if I am making the right decision.

Does anyone have a photo of the scars? Is the entrance to the band to have a refill visible?

Just need a little pep talk and encouragement. :nervous

Hi- just to let you know, I have been out going on 2 years with absolutely no complications. Just kind of a slower paced loss- the band should have gone around my head! But I am working through the emotional stuff that is the basis for my overeating and the band is definitely doing its job!

Hi.Be worried, it's natural.

However, I'm only two months out and I don't get a fill until Monday, I'm doing very well.

I don't have pictures of my scars, but there are 5 all together. Four tiny ones, like 1cm each or less, that are like a diamond pattern. One sits under my bra right in the middle its match is just above my belly button. The other two are across from each other half way down. The port scare IS the biggest, that would be the 5th, it's about an inch long, on the left next to one of the small ones.

A picture is worth one thousand words.

You'll find other people's pictures. Don't worry about your scars. A smaller tummy with a few scars is better than a big tummy without any.

OH Juli

Keep in mind that the people who get banded and are doing fine don't tend to post here...but the ones who are experiencing complications or problems are posting. So what you see here is a skewed picture of the experience.

There is s a 'sticky' at the top of the General Lapband Discussion forum called something like "Share your Scar Stages" and it's full of pictures.

We were all nervous before surgery...and for a few days after when we were dealing with the pain. But we're all here to talk about it and happily getting on with the business of losing weight! :Banane43:

Finally, the date is scheduled for June 4th. I guess my "last supper" will be Memorial Day weekend, (lol). I have made significant changes in my diet and I have a gym membership. My family is not that supportive. :cry

Dr. Mitchell Roslin will be performing the surgery at Lenox Hill Hospital, in NYC. http://www.nycbariatrics.com/.

They have been very supportive and so, and so have you all... my new supportive family. :)

I will keep you all posted on my progress. With a TICKER and all!:clap2:

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
