tyt221b 63 Posted September 10, 2014 I'm positive that I had pretty bad apnea before my RNY. I know that weight loss can make it much better, but I'm debating about asking my doctor to refer me for a sleep study before the end of the year since I've reached my out of pocket max on my insurance due to my surgery. Thoughts?
Jolisue 112 Posted September 10, 2014 I had one recently and have serious obstructive sleep apnea. I'm now on a CPAP machine. The doctor scared me straight in that I'm using it faithfully. Once I teach goal weight doc believes I won't have apnea anymore but I'll do another sleep study to confirm. My insurance covered it though so I'm not sure how much a study then CPAP machine costs. pik 262 Posted September 11, 2014 I didn't want to have one but I finally did. My internist wanted me to have one and so did my neurologist. Then it was a requirement of my surgeon so I went on and did it. I had Obstructive sleep Apnea and it was pretty bad. I got my machine and started using it, which was difficult because I have claustrophobia. I only wore it a few weeks after the surgery. I had actually lost enough that the apnea is no longer occurring. I did not have another sleep study proving that, but I can feel it. No more snoring, etc. I stopped wearing it and I have been sleeping very well through the night. After what I found out, if I had to go back and do it over, I would have done it long ago. If you do have it, it will be considered as a co-morbidity and your dr can add that on for approval of your insurance company for the surgery.
PJSH 0 Posted September 16, 2014 I had sleep apnea diagnosed by a sleep study way before my RNY and used a CPAP and oxygen at night. About 5 months after my surgery I went in for another study and was found to no longer have the apnea but now have restless legs which accounted for my sleep not being restful. It was a good thing to have that study because now I don't have to use the CPAP and am raking medicine fir the restless legs. I still use oxygen at night, too. Bottom line? I strongly recommend getting the study. Your resulting diagnosis will mean restful sleep!
