I have Kaiser too. My date to do the orientation us October 23rd. So far, you're ahead of me. Sorry I can't answer your question but maybe you can tell me what I should expect with the class. Have a great day!

I think it really depends on which Kaiser program you have.

Here in Colorado, the process went something like this.

PCP referral

Nutritionist appointment

Orientation

Approval for bariatric program

Appointment with bariatric RN

Scheduled for 6 weeks of group classes

First appointment with psych

Classes 1-4

2nd appointment with psych

Classes 5 & 6

Final approval from psych

Surgery scheduled 4-8 weeks out

Class #7

Monthly support groups

Is there a certain weight you have to be prior to surgery? I asked my doctor what the steps will be like and she said after my orientation she will refer me to the surgeon. So seems like it will be pretty fast for me.

I am KP in Northwest. It is essentially an entire year of the program. First showing weight loss attempts for approval. Then group class and weight management for two months. After that another group class. Nutritionist and social workers twice meetings. Lab work and ultra sound. Then they meet to discuss if you are surgery ready. Meet surgeon and maybe get a date. Seriously takes an entire year. I forgot the sleep study. It is a long process.

Which kaiser you going through ? I'm in sacramento and it's been very easy and fast . Each person has some weight to lose. I started in. May and could have had surgery in sept and that's only cuz I lost my weight really slow. Here we do orientation, meet with surgeon, nutrition class, at least one support group, one psych eval appointment, meet with RN get surgery date from her, Postop nutrition class and last visit with . I did my support group and doctors visit in the same day, i'm doing my nutrition class and my doctors visit on the same day so it's not really been much but they provide you with so much information. I can see that based on some of the people here on this website who don't get that information. I feel blessed. I tried this through Kaiser San Francisco A few years ago and it was just such a horrible experience I didn't follow through. This is been a completely positive experience now ... It was my sign that it's the right thing to do! Good luck!

It isn't so much about weight loss as it it about making sure you are prepared for the changes. They decide based upon your responses and commitment to the program if you will move forward. There are 9 steps once you are approved to be in the severe obesity program. I am at step 8 and I can tell you that it is a very long process.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
