EGD today - feeling discouraged and don't know what to do

Recommended Posts

I had my EGD today. I had one 1 1/2 years ago due to abdominal pain, nausea and severe anemia (which required multiple IV Iron infusions). At that time, I had mild gastritis, mild esophagitis and a hiatal hernia.

Today, the esophagitis was the same, but the gastritis is now level B (was A before - D is the worst) even though I've been taking my PPI. They also found stomach polyps and biopsied them. I had never even heard of stomach polyps before someone on here posted that they had been found on her EGD last week.

I know I'm probably over-reacting, but I'm scared. I'm not even sure I should get the surgery since my "parts" aren't healthy like I'd hoped. GI doctor doesn't seem too keen on me having surgery - but I think he may be just against it in general. All my other doctors are for it (of course, they don't know the EGD results yet).

BTW - I have been planning on getting the sleeve even with the GERD because of my RA and need for NSAIDs and steroids.

Please let me know what you think

Thanks,

Bree

Bree, I'm nowhere near smart enough to offer any opinions, but I wanted to wish you the best. Hopefully your docs will have some good advice for you, and you'll be able to proceed!

You aren't going to want the sleeve. No NSAIDs after the sleeve. :( I hope all biopsies come back decent.

Same here. No NSAIDS post-op with VSG. Says my doc and everything I've ever read about it.

I hate to add to your disappointments though.

@@VSGAnn2014 and @@lose4life - thank you for your replies. The NSAID question is one I've had several conversations with my surgeon about. In my particular case, he is allowing them. I know everyone's situation and surgeon are different. The reason I said I'm getting the VSG is that it can possibly make esophagitis worse, but I'm not a candidate for bypass.

My biggest concern right now is the polyps. I'm over my shock now and am confident they will come back benign :).

@@docbree don't give up. I don't remember why you ruled out LapBand but unfortunately no NSAIDs with those either. LapBand with plication has been successful for some folks here. Your polyps will be benign: good thoughts. Keep pushing for a solution. You are a tough lady!

Thanks @@JustWatchMe - I really appreciate it! I can't have lap band because not recommended with autoimmune disease (and definitely no NSAIDs).

I will be following because I would like to know what you find out. I am so sorry that you have RA. My mom has severe RA and it is terrible! BTW, my surgeon told me that NSAIDs are okay with the sleeve too. I specifically asked because I wouldn't want to live without my daily Celebrex. I hope you get answers quickly and are able to proceed.

Good Luck with everything. I have RA as well and was recommended to do sleeve over bypass. My surgeon said my overactive immune system would essentially kill the band, so that was out from the beginning. I manage the RA with a low dose of Mobic right now. Hoping that removing excess weight off my joints will help me step away from it completely.

Hang in there! Gastric polyps are unusual from what I understand and I thought I was all alone in that respect. You are my second polyp person on the forums I have found so far. The doc biopsies them just to make double sure you are ok for VSG. I have faith yours will be benign too. Keep hanging on!

@@vsgchick and @@Luvin_Life125 Thank you so much for your encouragement and support. It really helps to know I'm not alone. I will be thinking of both of you and wishing you well on your journeys. Please keep me posted on your progress.

Thinking of you dear. They are usually not cancerous so remember the odds are in your favor. You have a greater chance of it being benign. I'll be sending prayers your way. I'm sure it weighs heavily on your mind though. I had a cancerous tumor 16 years ago but I kicked that tumor's butt!!!! We are all here for you.....keep us posted honey

@@Nurselori - you are so sweet - thank you! I do feel better after researching a seeing that there is very little chance of them being even pre-cancerous. Hopefully, I'll know in a few days. Will post and let ya'll know the results.

Thanks again to everyone for all the warm thoughts and prayers. They are very much appreciated.

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.

Lost my Pup last month and struggled really hard for that first month. Stopped tracking intake and slid into old habits here and there. Also quit working out. Can't walk in the neighborhood because of all of the memories we shared. Losing my Pup is the most heartbreaking thing I've ever been through. My Pup was my world 💔
Talked to my doc during my one year followup and they were not worried about my current status. They know, and I know, that I will get back on track.

I'm so sorry. I lost my pup (Mr. Bitters - a chocolate Pomeranian) 2 years ago and it still makes me tear up. He was my everything - my constant companion. I understand. Do the best you can to get back on track.
