Dr Joya or Dr A. Lopez

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

I am still in the research phase of my WLS journey and have narrowed it down to two doctors, Dr Alejandro Lopez or Dr Joya in Peurto Vallarta.

Can anyone comment on the care they received with either doctor? I am on the fence . . . Dr Lopez's initial contact with the care worker was very positive and it seemed like they cared more about my health (with the questionnaires etc) than initializing payment. Dr Joya's inital contact was more about payment info than about my health but he offers the complication insurance for $500.00.

I would also like to know what you thought of the hospital facilites for both surgeons? Dr Joya - Amerimed OR Dr Lopez - Cornerstone Hospital.

Please help with any comments you may have . . good or bad :)

I had surgery with Dr. Lopez in Puerto Vallarta on August 13th. I worked with Cathy Zimmerman with Specialized Bariatrics beginning in April. She was a wonderful and accessible facilitator. And, yes. The focus was on my health and receiving lots of information (past and present) from me—the assessment was VERY thorough.

The experience in Puerto Vallarta went pretty smoothly. Dr. Leo picked me, my sister and another patient of Dr. Lopez’s up at the PV airport and drove us to the Marriott (which was BEAUTIFUL). The patient coordinator, AnnaKaren contacted me via email both prior to my arriving in PV and when I got there. Dr. Lopez performs only up to 5 surgeries per day. I met the two women he was operating on before me at the hotel (I was the last patient of the day). All logistical information was clearly explained to me by both Dr. Leo and AnnaKaren.

I met Dr. Lopez and Dr. Ramirez the following day before my pre-op tests and bloodwork. He explained the procedure and aftercare in great detail. The administration and nurses at Cornerstone Hospital were WONDERFUL—very caring, very attentive and no problem with a language barrier. Dr. Lopez came to see me twice after the surgery—once later that evening and the following day. I was released from the hospital after one night (with a drain, which Dr. Leo removed at the hotel the following morning), and got to spend three days, rather than two post-op at the hotel. Cornerstone is a small, private hospital with 10 beds, but it has an ICU and Emergency Room. It is very pretty, incredibly clean and very welcoming.

I can’t say enough about the care and professionalism I experienced with Dr. Lopez and Specialized Bariatrics, and believe me, I was very nervous about traveling to a foreign country for surgery. The whole experience was truly incredible and I’ve had no complications whatsoever. I know Dr. Lopez has performed several thousand bariatric surgeries and is highly credentialed. I can also share with you that the patients I was with during my week there were pleased with the experience, as well (one was from Canada, the other from Colorado). I’m truly grateful I chose Dr. Lopez (after LOTS of research) as my surgeon.

Best of luck to you on your journey! Hope this helped some.

Thank you so much for your feedback . . It really puts my mind at ease, much appreciated!! I am so happy you had a good experience and congratulations on your weight loss.

I have been trying to find a Mexican website to check credentials etc but I am not fluent in spanish, did you find somewhere to check this?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
