Hi new to boards not banded yet

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone,

I've been reading the boards for about a week now and love all of the information and discussions. I've learned so much.

I looked into the lap band several years ago and at the time it wasn't being performed in my area. Now I can go to the local hospital. It's amazing how fast it has grown in popularity and availability. I also wasn't ready for it and thought I needed to keep trying to work on the reasons I overeat. Well, I know why I overeat, I'm just having a really hard time stopping.

I go to a seminar on May 10th and I'm hoping they will be able to tell me if my insurance will cover it. I don't have high hopes though, because there might be an exclusion for any obesity treatment with my insurance. My employer changed insurance carriers this year and they say that we have the exact same benefits as before. I don't have a new benefits booklet yet, but the old one had the exclusion for any obesity treatment. So we will see. If it doesn't pay, I guess it just wasn't meant to be.

I still enjoy these boards though and I hope that, even if I don't get banded, you won't mind me visiting every now and then.

Sophie,

I pray that your insurance will pay for the banding...Maybe, it will....Don't give up...I was denied by insurance company, a couple of years ago, and after much debate with myself, I decided I would pay cash for surgery...$15,000.00 but it is worth every penny....I would do it again...best money I have ever spent on myself....

Even if you are not banded, you can still come to the site to read and post...maybe there will be some tips here that could help you convince your insurance company to pay for surgery...some people appeal the first denial and are banded...I knew a girl that sent a letter every week for months and the insurance company approved her for surgery...It could happen for you....

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
