Weight gain after surgery

Recommended Posts

I am 5 days out from surgery and have gained about 6 lbs. which is more than I weighed the day of surgery. Someone on one of the other threads said that is not unusual because of all the IV's they give you in the hospital. Is that the case for any of you. I know I have to be patient, but gaining weight is NOT what I am looking for. I , like the rest of you, am eating little. Still on liquids. When will the scales start to go down, not up? Of course would like some instant results like I got on the liver shrink diet when I lost 16 lbs. The day of surgery I was 286 and now am 292. Please let me know this is not unusual. Thanks. I am also so glad we have this group. I have asked some "wild" questions, and have always gotten a response, so am glad we are all here together for support.

I, too, gained after my surgery. I was 283 on surgery day and when I got home, the next day, I was up to 288. I stayed up for a few days, but it is steadily going down. Surgery was on 8/20 and today i weighed in at 270. Hang in there, it'll happen!

I was 241 when they weighed me prior to surgery and when I got home from the hospital I weighed 251. I gained ten pounds of fluid!

I think it took 3-4 days for it to come off. Each subsequent time (2x) I was in the hospital, I gained 5 pounds.

That Fluid comes off easily.

No biggie.

I personally gained almost 15 pounds in fluids. My surgeon said if you don't go home weighing 10 to 15 more pounds than what you came in with he's not doing his job. Sounded crazy to me but sure enough I started at 338 and was up to 354 the day I went home.

Thanks everybody. Nobody told me I would gain after surgery! What an irony. That makes me feel better to know it's not unusual.

I gained 11 pounds from IV fluids. It didn't freak me out because I had heard about it here. It took a week just to get back to my pre-surgery weight. Don't weigh yourself too often in the first couple of weeks. It'll save you from a feeling of disappointment. Rest assured you are on your way to a happier, healthier you!

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
