Anyone get acid indigestion AFTER the sleeve?

Recommended Posts

Has anyone gotten acid indigestion/gas from the surgery? I never had the acid indigestion before and now I do. I'm 6 mo's out of surgery and have to take Prilosec due to the acid indigestion. Dr wants to do an Endoscopy to be sure all is ok.

All my blood tests and Vitamins tests are normal.

If you have an issue w/acid indigestion how bad is it and what do you do for it?

Appreciate any info you guys can give.

Sherry

I ran out of the prescribed Prylocec and took some generic over the counter while at a casino in southern Oregon in the middle of nowhere and woke up with unbelievable chest pains. I thought I was having a heart attack, after the emergency technicians took my vitals and determined that my heart was fine I prayed that it was not a leak and went on my way. Next night, same thing but both time a tum helped relieve the pain so I realized that it was actually heart burn and got my prescription refiled. I used to have heartburn before the operation but nothing like that. If a little inexpensive pill will take care of the problem, i don't have a problem with that but chest pains were a bit too scary.

That had to be scary. I never had it before surgery but from research on this site I found it's quite common and one lady said it should improve or resolve about a yr out. I'm taking Zantac but will go back to Prilosec as Dr suggested.

GERD is one of the most common side effects of VSG. My surgeon required daily Omeprazole 40mg for two months, then weaned down to 20mg before stopping. Fortunately I have not had reflux, but I do get a burning sensation periodically. Usually a couple days of Rolaids will knock it out, but if not I do a week of Prilosec and then I'm good for several weeks.

mine got steadily worse with the lapband and the sleeve is even worse. I am kinda hoping it will subside some when I get closer to goal. what makes it worse: eating fast, eating carbs, spicey foods are dreadful. what makes it better, prilosec or equivalents, gaviscon/over the counter, slowing down, chewing more, staying upright for a while after eating. when I was vomiting last week they said they may have to check me for a stricture but I am somewhat better. eating too much, that 6th bite, makes me pay for it. my weight loss is slower than many, but steady. I am happily discarding stuff that is way too big and trying out old favorites and new fun stuff.I have lost a lot of muscle tone in abdominals last few years, I am hoping being fitter will help also. it is a pain.... "rehab is a bitch, aint it? " my motto. we have a heavy price to pay for our eating sins, but we can and will heal up. love sara

@Sherson I am almost 5 months out from surgery and AM having acid reflux. The Prilosec did not work for me so now I am taking Dexilant twice a day and that seems to control it (as long as I remember to take it 2x EVERYday). However my insurance won't cover it and it is VERY expensive, $300. per month :( I am seeing my doctor in a month so I'll see what his thoughts are ... Keep us posted.

I remember before surgery my surgeon mentioning something about 1/3 of people get it. I was on Protonix I think for 3 mo's after surgery then she put me on Prilosec. I tried going off it for 3 wks and taking Zantac but went back to Prilosec today.

This is not something I want to keep happening.

Eating doesn't seem to cause the acid that I've noticed. I also am loosing slow. I'm stuck at 30 lbs and soon as our indoor pool opens the 10th I'll get back to exercising 4-5x a wk to see if that won't bust the stall. I feel really good except for the occasional acid thing. I hope all this gets resolved after the 1st year.

Holy cow $300 a mo is way out of my price range. I'm gong to see if this 2nd time on Prilosec doesn't help. I will get the scope just to rule out any problems. I hope all of us get this out of our system by the end of the 1st year.

Keep us posted on how your doing.

I 've got a friend who had bypass 8 years ago. She still has to take Protonix everyday. Prilosec didn't work for her. Hope you find something that works for you.

I thought the bypass got rid of any GERD etc.

Protonix is about the same price as Prilosec. If Prilosec doesn't work this time I'll see if the Dr will put me back on Protonix.

Wednesday will be 2 weeks post op with my sleeve. I've been taking Pepcid AC twice daily. The burn always starts before my 2nd dose and then it's hard to get under control. I've never had this before. I hope it gets better!

I had mild acid reflux prior to my sleeve 2 1/2 years ago, but now it is horrible. I have been scoped 3 times since sugary and no esophagus damage yet but I am concerned. I can only eact a few bits of food no matter what it is. Then I feels like it is hung. Then I vomit but all that come us is stuff that looks like egg whites. My GI Dr said this is also reflux. Have been on 6 different meds. And none seem to work unless I take all of them at staggered times during the day. Anyone else doing this?

I never had problems before surgery but after I got the acid and have to take generic Prevacid but it is nowhere near as bad as yours. My Dr suggested a scope but it seems to be under control now and I only need to take Prevacid 2 wks out of the month.

Has your Dr suggested getting the gastric bypass since from what I'm told will stop GERD?

I hope your able to find a solution to this.

Try doubling the dose of Prilosec. I took 20 mg for years but it didn't stop all reflux. Now on 40 mg and no reflux. Insurance will probably pay for the higher dosage because there is not one over the counter. Mine does. I am pre-op. Scheduled Jan. 6, 2015.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
