I know every surgeon does things differently, but did anyone have a catheter for surgery? I have my pre op workshop Wednesday and want to ask about it... I personally would prefer not to have one... I want to be as mobile as possible so I can walk, walk, walk :)

They put mine in after I was asleep and I was so grateful for that. The nurse took it out the next morning because I was able to get up and walk enough at that point. It felt weird but never hurt. I took two walks total with it in and again it never hurt just felt strange. I can understand not wanting one - I was so worried about it.

Same for me. They put in after I was out cold, and then took it out first thing the next morning.

No cath my surgeon prefers not to use it so that there is no excuse for not walking immediately.

What I did want to do ASAP was go to the bathroom and used bed pan twice. Never want to repeat that adventure

My surgeon doesn't use a catheter and it was no problem for me at all. I was able to walk to the bathroom with a little help the first time and then by myself for the rest of my stay.

My surgeon required a catheter and I hated it. I found it somewhat uncomfortable and I was completely able to get up and use the bathroom even the day of surgery. I had mine in for 2.5 days. I found it very hard to urinate for 1-2 days after it was taken out. It burned like hell. I could walk around fine with the catheter in.

The catheter was completely unnecessary in my non-medically-educated opinion. Avoid it if you can.

God I hope they give me one at least for surgery.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
