I can't! I can't do it anymore!

Recommended Posts

I can't crush my pills anymore, I just can't! It's actually giving me anxiety because I dread it so much. I can't do it when so many others are swallowing pills right out of surgery. I questioned the surgeon's office today why they had a 4 month rule when so many other doctors don't. "Oh no. We don't do that here. It could get stuck in your pouch." I don't have a pouch!!!!!!!!

I couldn't do it anymore either! I asked my doctor the same question. And he said oh your are only 9 days post op. I said to him... have you ever had to take crushed meds? No human should have to out that in their mouth. He laughed at me. Told me to mix it with something. That doesn't help. I told him the only thing I take is my anxiety drug and he said break it in half and take it. Lol. Been doing that!

Been swallowing whole pills since the day after surgery. Never had a problem!

I was taking my blood pressure meds in the hospital before I came home. I am still taking six meds by swallowing pills. The only one I have a problem with post-sleeve is that nasty Bariatric Advantage AE required by my bariatric physician. It is a horse pill - a horse pill I tell ya! I cut it in quarters and still couldn;t get it down because of it's sharp edges from being split. So, I have to crush that one and put it in blueberry or cinnamon applesauce. At least it is tolerable that way.

My surgeons insist on crushing also. However we must must mix it with unsweetened applesauce sinxe day one. Something anout solid and digestion. It is so much more tolerable than in liquid.< /p>

I've also been swallowing pills since day 1 (blood pressure pill) and I take a sleeping pill from time to time. I've never crushed them or been told to do so. I never had a problem swallowing them, they are not big pills though. My Multivitamin was another thing. They made me wait 1 month before starting it. I had to cut it in half, but even that was hard because of its size. Five months out and I can swallow it whole now. So, hang in there. It'll get better.

I never had to crush pills...but they did require a chewable Vitamin the first few months and recomended Centrum chewable...not great, but not horrible. I switched to regular Centrum about 2-3 months out...much easier!

Can you get chewables for the big pills? At least Vitamins? Chew quick and chug Water or cranberry after! Again...not great, but a lot better than crushing regular pills...I wouldn't have been able to do it!

I have to crush pills too - except for the chewable Multivitamin and sublingual B12. The nurse at the hospital gave me the crushed meds in some melted sugar free popsicle - when it was mushy, not completely liquid. This tasted pretty good. She suggested that I mix it in a medicine cup with some Protein shake when I get home because I may not have the patience to melt the popsicle every time. I put it in with a little Premier Protein Shake the morning and it seemed ok. My husband bought a pill crusher at the drugstore.

Me too. Waited for about 3 weeks to take my Gabapentin (which r HUGE) but I took all of my normal pills within 2 days. I will say that the liquid Vicodin was great stuff. Works much better than pills...

Wow! Thanks for all the positive responses!!!! I feel so much better. I do take chewable vitamins and Calcium. It's my Effexor that is so gosh darn horrible...no matter what I mix it with.

Jeez, I never had to crush any pills. Take a thyroid and a Protonix daily.

And I have never had any problems at all. (They even gave me whole pills in the hospital post-op.)

My multi-vitamin/mineral is chewable, but that honker is big.

I take more pills than all of you- crushed them for three weeks. The worse taste of anything.

Take my pills and 5 weeks total and doing ok- Dr. Fielding told me I can eat anything- within reason. Just follow the rules that I learned for the first month post op. Happy days

I take 13 pills a day and I've been swallowing them while since the day I got home from surgery! I've had no problems. I just now I have to take them 1 at a time where as I used to could take a few at a time.

I took liquid pain meds for the first 5 days. I was told that I could take a solid pill if it was smaller than an eraser on a pencil. If they are solid then they can be cut with a pill splitter.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
