Married with children......

Hello,

I'm haven't been banded yet, but I wanted to know from others how you handled the first month post op with the liquids and having a family to feed every night?

I'm afraid my husband will get sick of picking up fast food every night, and I'm not sure I'll want to be cooking every night. I'm sure there is a compromise somewhere as he has been very supportive. Just wanted some ideas of what othes did in this first month.

Thanks for listening.

Lynette

Boston Market is good and a lot healthier than typical fast food for the family. Honestly, after a few days I was fine cooking.

Thanks Libra,

I love Boston Market, but there aren't any around where I live. They've all closed down.

I do hope I'm feeling up to cooking, but I'm not sure if it will be a bigger temptation for me.

If your husband can't or won't cook (which of course he CAN), you might pre-cook a lot of meals and stick them in the freezer. But really, a few days out and you'll be good to go. The temptation aspect will be there, but if you're always going to be the cook you are going to have to deal with it sooner or later.

Thanks for the replies. He can cook, but has only done this once since we've been together for 7 years. We have a 3 year old and he has a 12 and 15 year old from a previous marriage.

I'm just thinking I always buy packs of meat with say 2 steaks, or 3 chicken breasts, and there is always leftovers on chicken night.

I just don't want to waste food. (the 12 and 15 year olds only come every other weekend)

It just seemed like fast food would be easier and cheaper for them to eat, but I guess if I want them to eat healthy, I'll have to do the cooking. It's worth it in the end, and the temptations will always be there. So it probably is better to get it out of my system right off the bat.

Thanks,

Lynette:)

Sometimes what I do is cook from the freezer. Or the pantry. This involes simple things-- perhaps opening up some canned veggies, or pouring some frozen ones into a bowl. Then the product gets put in the microwave. The rest of the meal is done the same way. Preheat the oven or open up the microwave and plop in something from the freezer. You'd be surprised at what you can find in the frozen food aisle. There is stuff that is pretty healthy and tastey. Same goes for canned goods- I like chunkey Soups myself. If you go to sams club or costco you can find things like frozen hamburger patties or fish filletes or salmon or chicken or a bunch of stuff where all your husband would have to do is either put them in the oven and set the timer (maybe turn them once) or microwave them. Plus if he does decide to do carry out you can remind them to pickup a salad or that chinese food might have veggies in it, that sort of thing.

I bought tv dinners for the first two weeks post-op for the husband and kids. They picked their own varieties and I didn't have to worry about meals. Hungeryman makes some good size meals. Best of Luck.

Hello....I guess it'shard for some...But as a single Parent--I just had the mind set to cook for my boys. Maybe as a Man--I was tougher. But in the first 30 days--21 pounds gone. I didn't exercise the 1st week due the pain. I started riding my bike--1/2 a block, 1 block and my farthest distance--5.7 miles on Friday(5/4/07)..I can't lie to you--I was sooo tired. I have not gotten weighed yet--my last weigh in was 4/27/07...I am now keeping track of the miles I do daily with my bikes speedomater. It's been amazing that I have 2 little guys--8 and 10 who guides and pushes me each day. My sons amaze me--I have now got them on Protien drinks along with me. I had a complaint--my son said his back and legs where hurting...I filled him up with 15 to 20 grams of protien--3 days straigt--2 times a day...

Anyway--back to eating...Why can't you just cook for the family. Get one of the kids to be your taste tester. That is what I did to my kids. They tasted all of the foods and I am now. There has got to be something your husband can do to help. If you married a Man who is "One dimentional"--Oh well...What happens when you get sick--otherwise> So your family eats fast food?

I second the idea of cooking food and freezing it. You can do pans of stuff like lasagna, your hubby can just pop the pan in the oven and bake it for however long and serve it up. You can also freeze things like chili. You could have a few deli sandwich nights, where you buy cold cuts and bread n' stuff and everyone can make their own sandwich.

I think cooking ahead and freezing is the best option. But what I did for my fiance is buy him a lot of frozen dinners. He ended up eating fast food/pizza 80% of the time anyway, but if your family likes frozen dinners-- voila!

Hello,

I was banded on august 23rd of 2006. I was worried about this also. I have an 11 year old son and have been married for 7 years. I was lucky that I have a husband that cooks. When I was on my liquid diet my husband still cooked for him and my son. I cook when I am off from work and I cook the normal stuff that I always cooked but I eat little portions and the rest of my family eats portions of what they normally eat. Maybe your husband can start to cook more or if he doesn't know how to cook then maybe you can show him the small little cooking tips to cooking the stuff you would normally cook for your family. Hopefully you have a supportive family, it makes it so much more better once you have the surgery.

Good Luck, Dieta

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

      2. BlondePatriotInCDA

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
