Told my coworkers

Recommended Posts

I had no plans to do it as I guess I admit I feel a little ashamed I have not been able to "fix" myself. But I have had so many doctor appts (e.g. the mammogram turned into 2 mammograms then a breast ultrasound... Negative... Whew!) and now this surgery. A couple of my coworkers were concerned, I could tell. They were dancing around the question. So I sent them all an email and said, ok, here's the deal...

I got the most loving, supportive responses a person could receive. I am blessed.

Jcp very happy for you. Support is so important

like you, I've told some of my coworkers/friends. I've been at my job for 25 years and a few of my friends have been there just as long. So it was difficult to keep it from them. Thankfully, I've received nothing but support. I laugh at myself because every time I tell another coworker , I ask them not to tell but at the rate I'm going, everyone will eventually know! And it will be because of me :-)

I've told almost all of my coworkers that I will be having the surgery. They have seen me go through so much medically that i felt they would be supportive. Everyone has been great so far! And most of them are just as excited as I am!

My co-workers were supportive both pre- and post-op, which was really a nice bonus. People were also genuinely interested in hearing about the surgery and lifestyle changes. I was expecting at least one person to put me in the position where they wanted me to justify the surgery, which I would not have done. But no one did.

Now that I'm post-op, I'm getting many compliments and affirmations from my co-workers. It's just wonderful! People are interested to see what and how much I'm eating. A few people are even trying to adopt my eating habits to help with Portion Control. Our positive life-changes are contagious I guess. :)

I just started and it will be six months before surgery but I told my boss because of all the appointments I'll be having. She's supportive and talks about how skinny I'll be lol. Afraid to tell her assistant cuz she's gossip queen. Lol

I told the co workers in my immediate department. That's all I needed to do I didn't need to tell everyone because I knew by the end of the day whether I said I didn't want everyone to know....somehow they all would know. And they did! Lol. Oh well

I've told a few co-workers and all I heard was:

Please don't do that, you can do it on your own! (From the same people who criticized any diet I was ever on prior to this.)

Just join crossfit instead.

You aren't THAT fat.

What can I do to talk you out of surgery?

Don't you know that everyone gains all their weight back after bypass? Just look at ___________.

I've had to tell several of them to zip it. Overall I don't care what they think as long as I become healthy and active again!

Amen Mike! I was mostly concerned about them being worried more than anything, mostly the multiple breast exams, then surgery, then weight loss and my hair falling out! I know what they would all be thinking! Especially since I recently had a precautionary hysterectomy, ovaries, etc, after our latest family ovarian cancer diagnosis. My co-worker said that he was sure I had cancer until I let them know what was up.

I'm fortunate that work is on my side. They all know there was a girl on our team had it done that's how I learned of the surgery. Others were I work have had it done. My friends are on my side so I've had no negativity. One friend cindi asked if I'm sure of course I say yes. Then she thinks she'll lose me as a friend when I lose the weight. Keep telling her no. Time will show her I'll still be her friend. My daughter had the regular bypass and she changed took 7 years for us to start talking and this operation I'm doing. If you're doing this for the right reasons then it shouldn't change the person you are just your size and being healthier.

I'm not telling any of my coworkers anything. Frankly, it's none of their business. I don't consider my coworkers as my friends, and never will. If someone does try to ask me anything, I will be as direct as I can in letting them know it is none of their business, and will remind that person that he or she does not have the right to ask me about my personal business. That'll get them running away and quick!

I'm on the fence... sleeve is 9/16 n have not told coworkers, I've been there 5 years. I work in outside sales from home n on the road n only see them at our monthly meeting. My family n close friends know, I figure when I loose a lot of weight n they see me, I can share then in person if I want. Is that silly? I'm not sure?

Not silly at all. You have the luxury of not seeing them every day and getting asked lots of questions? So take it at your own pace. You'll know when the time is right- If ever.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
