Pregnant on the LapBand

Recommended Posts

I was banded about a year ago and am only half way to my goal weight. I struggle a lot with what kinds of food I have been eating and that is why I believe that my weighloss has been slow.

I recently found out that I am expecting. This is my 5th child but 1st since being banded. Does anyone have any suggestions or stories on how their pregnancy went after they got banded? I am wondering if I should get my band loosened although I feel fine with where it is at and do not want to gain extra weight if I get it loosened. Any suggestions and comments help. Thanks.

If you can eat enough calories with no unfill then there isn't really a need to losen it! If you are overweight then they won't get super concerned about minimal weight gain or even a little loss during pregnancy.

Just keep an eye on how you are feeling and if your band gets too tight when you swell up. And stay hydrated!!!

I went through my whole pregnancy and never had to have an unfill. I was able to have only small weight gain. I have just struggled to get back on track after baby. My biggest complaint was the baby kicking my port when I got further along. It's not necessarily painful...Just uncomfortable! And those people that always run up and rub your belly always mistaked my port for the baby's foot! LOL....My port started to show a little bit at the end. Overall you should be fine. I think the band helps us form not gaining a ton of pregnancy weight! No telling how much I would've gained without the band! Just listen to your body. You will know if you need to unfill. Some doctors recommend totally un-filling during pregnancy...I highly discourage that! Congrats on the baby!

Ive gained like 3 pounds. I dont know if I should be happy or worried. LOL. Usually by this time in my previous pregnancies I would have gained at least 20 lbs and another 20 in the next 10 weeks. I'm 29 weeks now, so I have 11 weeks til term but I am high risk because I have had a still born at 39 weeks so I am usually able to cry my way in to an early labor...I usually get induced at 38 weeks, so I am about 9 weeks away from D-Day. I have been so tight lately and worried about baby's weight gain so I will go and get about 1cc taken out tomorrow. I cant wait to actually eat :)

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
