Food Not Filling Me Up

Recommended Posts

I was sleeved on August 22nd and just got the go ahead for blended food yesterday. I am not filling up. I am only eating a small amount but I am stopping myself, not because I am full. I just ate a whole scrambled egg and could eat another. I thought I would feel full.

Sleeved the same day as you. I thought the same thing until today (literally just 20 minutes ago). Just had some refried Beans for dinner with a little cheese, and they tasted so good I didn't stop. Well THAT was a mistake. I just spent 20 miserable minutes thinking I was going to throw up. Lesson learned. I pushed it and I paid for it! Now I will be measuring my portions and stopping there because I KNOW I can get full now ;) You'll get there!

Since I've started puree/soft foods, I have eaten an egg and added some fat free shredded cheese in with it. Sometimes, I'll add Jimmy Dean Turkey Sausage Crumbs (make sure they're smashed). That usually fills me up. My doc told me that if I still feel hungry to eat a little more, but don't overdo it. Your new stomach will let you know when you've done too much.

It may be that your stomach is still healing from your surgery (nerves are cut, etc) and you just haven't healed enough to feel that full feeling. I hope that's it!

I was sleeved in June and I rarely have that full feeling so many people describe. I so wish I did. Instead I weigh all of my food and I keep my portions at least 1 ounce under what my surgeon recommends for whatever phase of diet I'm in. That way I know I'm under-eating my sleeve and not relying on that full feeling because it's likely not to come for me.

Not trying to nay-say or scare you, I think most people end up feeling that full feeling but there are a few of us out there who don't.

In my first couple weeks post sleeve, I got a sharp pain that told me enough was enough. That went away. I was on my own. Sometimes you push it and continue to eat and feel wretched afterwards. Just because you can eat more than one egg, doesn't mean you should. Are you eating slowly? If not, use a baby fork to slow yourself down. Weigh out 2 to 3 ounces of food for other items that aren't pre-portioned for you. You may not feel full. But the goal is not to eat until you are full. The goal is to eat until you are satisfied. Those are two different things. Take a step back and ask yourself if you feel hungry anymore after that one egg. Not if you are full. In the beginning it is really hard to separate the two things mentally.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
