IM SO WORRIED ABOUT MY HAIR FALLING OUT!

Recommended Posts

I had the same worry. I am 7 weeks post op and I haven't noticed any hair loss. I was told to keep my Protein up to curb the Hair loss and it appears to have worked!

I have the same worry and have been told the same about the protien. I have also been told that taking Biotin helps... I've also been told that it takes 2-4 months for nutritional deficits to manifest as hair loss, and that it really doesn't matter what you do, you will lose hair... Any other thoughts?

I have many friends who have had the surgery and not one has had any Hair loss. As long as you do not let yourself get malnourished you will be fine. I'm 14 days away from my surgery!! I'm so excited!!! Good luck to you!!!

Google 'weight loss surgery' and 'hair loss' for some excellent explanations of your hair's growth cycles and how stress affects it (ALL stress - emotional AND physical, including rapid weight loss, dietary, and, yes, even surgery). Getting enough Protein, taking Biotin, using nioxin shampoos - all of these will help new Hair growth be healthy but none of these are proven to prevent Hair loss. If you are going to lose it you WILL lose it. Some lose a little, some lose a lot. It is temporary and will grow back. It's only hair.

When I was heavy, if someone told me I could lose 120 pounds by shaving my head bald (and it was true) would I have done it? Damn right I would've!!!! I'd have knocked you down on my way to the razor! Relax, and keep things in perspective. I lost my hair by the handful between 4 and 9 months. I took Biotin from 3 months pre-op onward, I met my Protein goals post-op and my hair STILL FELL OUT. At about 9 months it stopped and new growth began to show. I keep it short now until the new growth catches up. Now that I'm thin, short hair looks good on me - I may keep it like this! :-)

Thanks girls. I'm going to experiment after my surgery. I'm going to see a natural-path and have him monitor all of the Vitamin levels in my body. Whatever I'm deficient and I'm going to have them replace it Intravenously. I haven't read anything from anybody else who has done this. I feel like a Surgeon understands surgery and a natural path understands the Vitamins we need to keep our body healthy. Any thoughts?

I am 10 months out, I took Biotin along with my other Vitamins for a year prior to surgery, month prior I was getting over 100 grams of Protein a day and have averaged 85 to 100 grams since day 5 of surgery. My hair has thinned out a lot but I seem to be the only one who notices, I cut it a bit shorter and use a root booster. I think it's slowly coming back, I switched to a quick dissolve line of all natural vitamins about 3 months ago, think they have helped my hair and nails

Seems like other people don't really notice our hair loss. I have been losing hair for years due to the weekly chemo I take. The only one who notices that is my fiance because it is all over the place!

Whenever I get my hair cut people think it is so thick. In reality, I used to have more than three times the hair I have now.

I think I could be bald if it meant I was a normal size. Wigs, dew rags, and hats can be fun. Although I I don't have a date yet I've been taking Biotin since I started my preoperative journey. And I don't mean to sound negative if it happens it happens but sometimes priorities can change.

My hair dresser is the only person who knows my hair thinned out. I wear it short anyway, but I did lose a lot. My brushes are full, which is a first for me. I have fine hair so I never had hair in my brush. It started at about 3.5 months. I took Biotin and my labs show I'm not malnourished at all. It's just part of the process.

Very true! :-) The end result is the important thing. I was willing to sacrifice a little hair for being healthy. And it's true - we notice it way more than others do! :-)

When does hair stop falling out and start frowning back. I'm 7 months out. My hair has been falling out in clumps for two months. I am actually using hair fibers on my crown to hide how thin it has gotten. My weight loss has slowed a lot and I'm only losing a pound every few weeks now as I'm pretty much at goal. I've lost 80 pounds since surgery. I love the weight loss but my hair is freaking me out. Does it grow back??? I'm 52 years old and had hysterectomy years ago. I'm also worried because I went through menopause years ago with hysterectomy that it will impact regrowth. Anyone out there in my shoes???

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
