Am scheduled for October 30th. I have to do a 1 week preop diet. It may be silly but my biggest worry at the moment is giving up coffee. I drink at leas 4 large cups a day. I am sure I will have withdrawal symptoms. Any other coffee addicts out there who have made it through?

I suggest gradually switching from high octane to Decaf. I've also heard a lot of people talk about how much they liked Chike Iced coffee Protein powder.

I had surgery in March. I quit a week preop and I seriously thought I had the flu. It was not fun. Not telling you that to scare you, just want you to be prepared. I DO recommend doing it preop. If I had had those symptoms immediately post op, I'd have been even more miserable. I got through it with Decaf tea (hot) and decaf Protein coffee. It was doable but I won't lie, pretty impressive. The worst was day 2-3 then it was mild withdrawal and over by day 5. I started drinking it again at 1 month post op but mostly I stayed with hot tea for a few months. Now I have 1-2 cups French Roast with half and half in am and discovered Starbucks iced coffee+milk which has 50 calories and 5 carbs (light blue top) for afternoon pick me up. I try to limit the Iced coffee to only a few times a week because 1) it's expensive 2) bothers my reflux 3) don't want to go back to a raging habit. I still love that first cup in the morning. My doc is good with all of it, just need to limit due to reflux.

Good luck and try not to worry. This is hands down the best thing I've ever done. Those rough days seem like a blip on the radar, seems like eons ago. I'm down 90 pounds. Life is good and worth every temporary discomfort.

I was too addicted to caffeine to give it up prior to surgery. I drank my last cup the day before surgery and have not had caffeine post surgery I figured, correctly, that post surgery pain meds would get me through the withdrawal headache. I was too worried about irritating my sleeve to drink it after being released from the hospital. By my 6 week follow up, I was use to Decaf and found I could drink it black if I made it strong. (which is what I do at home) At coffee houses, I order lattes with non fat milk and Splenda or sugar free Syrup. I still want COFFEE, but figure I've made it 19 months decaffeinated so why start the habit again.

I love coffee!!! I too would advise weaning preop. You have time to work your way down. Half-caf may help too. My dr let me have coffee postop just no caffeine. Immediately post op my coffee tasted awful so I didn't drink it. I was really kind of sad about that. I now drink my am cups & possibly another mid afternoon. I sweeten with sugar free Torani Syrup & use a little half-n-half (just log it all in MFP!) good luck!

I <3 coffee. A lot.

I gave it up about 4 days pre-op, and surprisingly didn't feel bad from it. I started drinking it again 6 weeks post op. I now drink it freely again. You just have to make sure it doesn't interfere with any Vitamins you may be taking.

The dietician in my docs office says there are studies showing people who drink coffee in the morning are hungrier in the afternoon. It's probably true, but I don't care, because I just have another cup of coffee if I get hungry :)

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
