bikrchk 1,313 Posted September 3, 2014 You need to check with your medical team. Most of us receive very different professional advice on diet progression. For me, I think I stuck to Decaf for the first couple of months since I'd already weaned off caffeine. After that, I opted to allow a single caffeinated drink per day. I had been a "drink coke zero like it's Water girl before" and it took me 6 months to break that addiction. One of the reasons caffeine is bad is that it leeches the Calcium from your system. As we've had major gastric surgery, we have a decreased capacity to absorb minerals to begin with and need to retain all we can.
Sunnyskies2283 23 Posted September 3, 2014 I had my first cup of coffee 8 weeks post op today. I emailed the dietician to see how "bad"it really is. We will see.
Forsythia 882 Posted September 4, 2014 I have coffee often. Once I was on general diet, coffee was not restricted. I usually take a scoop of unflavored or vanilla Protein powder and kill a couple birds with one stone - necessary nectar of the gods and 30 grams of Protein in one fell swoop. LOL. SparkleCat 521 Posted September 4, 2014 I have 2-3 cups if coffee each day. NUT gave me the go ahead about 2 months out. Haven't had any problem with it. I did switch from half and half to powdered milk (not coffee mate!) to boost Protein a bit
par1959 470 Posted September 4, 2014 My doc let me drink coffee right off the bat. One thing to think about, for every cup of coffee you need to match it with Water because it’s a diuretic.(spelling) That being said coffee is the best appetite suppressant I have found. Before surgery I could not sleep if I drank coffee. Now I can abuse it and still sleep. It’s my one and only vise. I also dont have acid problems. That could be a problem for some. swmassey126 10 Posted September 9, 2014 I was given coffee with my Breakfast the day I was discharged. I drink it black. I have had no issues.
tiffdmill 26 Posted September 9, 2014 Is everyone drinking regular or Decaf?
SparkleCat 521 Posted September 9, 2014 I drink about two mugs of regular, then switch to Decaf if I want more. So, both I guess
Bufflehead 6,358 Posted September 10, 2014 coffee isn't any more of a diuretic than Water is and will not dehydrate you. There may be other reasons to avoid coffee and/or caffeine but that isn't one of them. http://life.nationalpost.com/2014/01/21/nutrition-fact-or-fallacy-does-coffee-dehydrate-you/ http://www.npr.org/blogs/thesalt/2014/01/13/262175623/coffee-myth-busting-cup-of-joe-may-help-hydration-and-memory http://www.webmd.com/balance/caffeine-myths-and-facts?page=2 and coffee has been cited for having positive health benefits as well: http://www.mayoclinic.org/healthy-living/nutrition-and-healthy-eating/expert-answers/coffee-and-health/faq-20058339
