You need to check with your medical team. Most of us receive very different professional advice on diet progression. For me, I think I stuck to Decaf for the first couple of months since I'd already weaned off caffeine. After that, I opted to allow a single caffeinated drink per day. I had been a "drink coke zero like it's Water girl before" and it took me 6 months to break that addiction. One of the reasons caffeine is bad is that it leeches the Calcium from your system. As we've had major gastric surgery, we have a decreased capacity to absorb minerals to begin with and need to retain all we can.

I have coffee often. Once I was on general diet, coffee was not restricted. I usually take a scoop of unflavored or vanilla Protein powder and kill a couple birds with one stone - necessary nectar of the gods and 30 grams of Protein in one fell swoop. LOL.

I have 2-3 cups if coffee each day. NUT gave me the go ahead about 2 months out. Haven't had any problem with it.

I did switch from half and half to powdered milk (not coffee mate!) to boost Protein a bit

My doc let me drink coffee right off the bat. One thing to think about, for every cup of coffee you need to match it with Water because it’s a diuretic.(spelling) That being said coffee is the best appetite suppressant I have found. Before surgery I could not sleep if I drank coffee. Now I can abuse it and still sleep. It’s my one and only vise. I also dont have acid problems. That could be a problem for some.

I was given coffee with my Breakfast the day I was discharged. I drink it black. I have had no issues.

I drink about two mugs of regular, then switch to Decaf if I want more. So, both I guess :)

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
