Band to Sleeve in One surgery

Recommended Posts

Has anyone had the band revised to a sleeve in one surgery? I am considering this but am worried about recovery from 2 surgeries with young kids at home.

I just did it 6 days ago! So, far so good! The recovery is a little longer than the band but the weight loss started immediately I am down 12lbs so far! Good luck!

I did it that way too. doing ok tho not losing as fast as some of you amazing people. I didnt want to go thru 2 surgeries, 2 anesthesias, 2 recoveries. I think it was better tho not without a few glitches and stalls. good luck.

Hi, my surgeon did the band/sleeve revision in one procedure. I was under for 3 hours so waking up took some effort. Like ambc35 my recovery took a little longer too. I took off two weeks and I needed the time. I was pretty tired and there was a fair amount of pain where the port was. I've had absolutely no problems since returning to work 3 weeks after surgery. I don't have kids so I can't speak to that. I have a dog and that forced me to walk every day after I came home from the hospital. Walking was the very best thing I did for myself to speed recovery.

My weight loss is slower than I'd hoped. I wish it was more but I'm not too discouraged (yet). I think it's a combo of my starting weight and limited pre-op calorie consumption. I couldn't keep down much I was banded because I threw up practically every meal. (Sorry for the TMI.)

Would I do it again? Absolutely.

Stats:

Surgery July 28, 14

Pre-op 212

Now: 183

Goal 140

I did my revision to sleeve in one day, had lots if scar tissue, was in a lot of pain the day of surgery until the pain meds kicked in, after that I've been fine, I was ready to go back to work on the 4th day post op, I've been back to both of my jobs, people can't believe that I'm post op. Had my surgery on aug 20th, went back to work on the Tuesday the 26th (registered nurse), then on Thursday Friday and Saturday worked at salon, hairstylist no problems at all. You will be fine, have to get your fluids in, walk, and think positive!!!!!

I am hoping to get banded to sleeve in the same operation. I am scheduled for Sept 9 at 7:30am. I am supper excited and scared at the same time. I have a 6mth old boy that I have to make sure is taken care of too. When I got my band my recovery was a breeze, I am hoping for the same but we will see. Can anyone give me any helpful tips on what to expect the first couple of days after surgery. I only took off 4 days off of work so I am a little worried that I won't be able to get back to work in the amount of time that I want to.

Mine was all in one and took about 2 hours. Not a lot of scar tissue but my port was embedded and took a bit to get out. That is the area I had pain for a good week or 2. I was glad my dr was able to do it in one because I really didn't want to be put under twice.

mine was all in one and I took a week off. The first few weeks back I was pretty worn out at the end of the day as my energy was not back to 100% and being in liquids for so many days. The best thing is get up and walk as soon as you can after surgery. I was moving 3 hours after getting to my room. Drink your liquids to stay hydrated and if you are in pain take your pain meds. It doesn't help the healing process if you are are in lots if pain. And rest as much as you can while you are off work. I would sleep when I felt like, mostly after taking my pain meds as it made me sleepy. It was also hard to get up, sit back down, and find a comfortable place to sleep but work with it and find what works best for you. Listen to your body as it will let you know sleepy, thirsty, you need to move etc. just FYI it May be hard to pick up the little guy at first (I couldn't lift more then 10lbs for a month after surgery) so be careful, I know it will be hard my youngest is 3 but we got thru it. good luck and speedy recovery.

I went band to sleeve in the same op. Band was in for 10 years. Pretty difficult to get out, operation took twice as long as expected. Woke up after the op, felt groggy for a few hours then all was well. No pain, no gas, no complications, felt good enough to go home on the same day ! Was asked to stay in for 2 days for observations, which were all normal. Almost 4 weeks out now and the whole thing has been an absolute breeze so far. I've lost about 26lb. Not feeling hungry, bit of head hunger at times. Far better to have the band removed and sleeve done in one operation. if your surgeon thinks it's safe to do so, then you only have 1 hospital stay and one operation to recover from ! Obviously if your surgeon things it may not be a good idea once he has a look in there then best to wait. For me no regrets, wish I'd have done this years ago. Good luck :-)

Had mine at once also. Took my dr an extra 30 mins to dig my band out of my stomach so I had a rougher recovery. That bottle of liquid Vicodin was my buddy for about 12 days.

I don't work (retired Army) and THANK GOD. I wouldn't have been up to going back to work for weeks. I played poker about 6 days out and I was miserable sitting in one spot for 3 hrs. Had to keep excusing myself so I could walk around the room.

My band surgery was easy peasy compared. Not to disuade u. Most people have little pain afterwards. Not sure why mine was so much harder...

Good luck!

I am having mine done in two surgeries; My doctor stated the risk for leakage would increase due to the spot where the band used to be. I'm glad I waited the band removal was simple maybe 30 min. tops. I will wait 8 weeks to heal and then get my sleeve. Dr. Jeffry Henke of WLS has removed my gallbladder, and my lap band with minimal complications and very little pain. With the shorter use of anesthesia I have had minimal hair loss and was back to work the following week.

I am wondering how hard it was to get your insurance company to pay for the band removal and the sleeve surgery? Or, did they pay? I had a lot of trouble with my first doctor and he left so I decided to try another hospital and doctor and when I called they told me that the doctor would have to approve it since I had the band put in with another doctor. Has anyone tried to change doctors and ran into that problem? And, did they pay? Did the desire to overeat leave with the sleeve because the band never brought me to not want to eat. food just went right through the band and that is with 9ml in my band so I had it all removed after getting tired of choking and PB. please help. I always said I wouldn't allow my stomach to be cut by anyone and that is why I had the sleeve. But, I am only 49 and geting where I can't move because my feet and knees hurt so bad. please help

It was easy for me, I didn't even tell my insurance company until after the operation when they got the bill ! My out of pocket was about $6k, insurance paid the rest. I'm in Australia, I think things work a lot differently over here. Where are you from ?

It wasn't hard for me at all. I was blessed to have a good surgeon who was willing to work with me. So it all came together. I had my surgery Friday, and i was home yesterday. I'm feeling fairly good.

Honestly, my insurance fought me on getting the sleeve, but they came around. That was because of my doctor and the team thay was with them. He knew what to do and say to get things a proved

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
