Please tell me this is not abnormal

Recommended Posts

I'm 7 months out and had lost 80.5 pounds and was doing and feeling great, in the last 4 days I've gained 5 lbs!!!

The only thing different is I've dropped one Protein Shake and going for more Protein elsewhere and I went to a potluck yesterday but could only get in a few bites and a couple of those bites were little smokies in BBQ Sauce so I don't think the small amount I ate yesterday would have contributed to it but who knows, I'm still new at this. I've not had regular bowel movements this week and that could be some of it. I get a minimum of 64 oz of Water in addition to other drinks like two cups of coffee... The only thing different is the 30 grams of protein I usually get from my shakes. Someone please tell me this happens and the scale will start heading back in the other direction. Thanks, Tammy.

Constipation can become a problem after surgery. I have found that eating an apple each night prior to bedtime cures this for me. But you must eat the skin of the apple.

Many individuals report hitting stalls during their weight loss. Some individuals even gain weight temporarily. Sometimes this might be associated with Water retention. Some people recommend only weighing yourself once per week at the same time of the day to avoid the stress.

Was there a reason you stopped the shakes? Personally, I stopped mine a long time ago, when I went on solid foods. My nut didn't want me to rely on the shakes. I'm not an expert but am only guessing at this. You dropped 30 grams of Protein but it doesn't sound like you made up protein in other ways. I think you need to do that. You still need to get in your protein. Try that to see if that helps. (I don't know what a smokie is so can't comment on that, though barbeque sauce is filled with sugar so not the best option)

I'll start eating apples it'll be a nice treat as well.

I stopped the shake hoping to make up for it at meals but you're right, I haven't had much luck with getting more Protein from the table food. I'm really struggling with eating meat. I use to love all kinds of meat but since surgery it just doesn't taste good. I'm forcing myself to eat it for the sake of protein but it makes for miserable meal time. I'm trying to look at anything I take into my body as fuel and try and change my whole mindset on eating. That's easier said than done but I'm getting there. I'm sure this weight gain must just be a glitch and I'm trying to not stress over it but 5lbs gave me some concern.

I have been eating very high Protein Soups and chili. I consume a cup a meal. At that volume, I am consuming about 60 grams per day just from my meals. I have included some recipes in my article. http://www.breadandbutterscience.com/Surgery.pdf

James, that is the most comprehensive "document" I have seen that breaks things down so concisely, I truly appreciate you! It took some weight off my brain, so thank you for that. It just seems so logical.

Now I did not notice you mention hair loss, was that an issue for you?

Smiley,

I had Hair loss for about 2-1/2 months...at first it seemed like a lot since I have very fine hair but it gradually slowed down and stopped. I did however get a very short haircut to avoid pulling it to comb or brush it. Thank goodness I only had thin spots, no bald spots.

I did not have a problem with hair loss. Around a decade ago I started using a supplement called Juvenon. I order it over the internet. The supplement feeds the mitochondria in the cells and makes them healthy. One of the side effects of this supplement is that it slowed and reversed my Hair loss 10 years ago and also stopped my hair from graying. My surgeon restricted my use of this supplement until around the 2nd month after surgery and then I began taking it again. I am 65 years old and initially experienced some hair loss around age 55 due to normal aging.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
