What happened to the Duodenal Switch forums?

Recommended Posts

I'm sad to see that forum gone and feel really bad for new DSers who might be in search of some guidance.

I had my surgery July 8th and used the forum to help guide me along the way.

The Duodenal Switch is completely different weight loss surgery in how the body absorbs nutrients. It is vitally important to have external support from DS vets to get accurate information. Too many patients have ended up very ill and in the hospital because they followed the recommended diet for Gastric Bypass. If we eat a Low Fat diet we will eventually die.

So very sad that its gone. It feels like the admins here felt it wasn't a legitimate WLS, when in fact it is growing in popularity due to is success and lack of complications among the compliant and educated.

I would like to see the DS forum restored if possible.

I don't get the removal of the DS forum. WTF? I am just getting to the point of getting out again on the internet, after my DS on 8/26/14. Was there no announcement or explanation? DS is the ONLY surgery that really works across the board. I wasted 4 years with the Gastric Sleeve and SO many people are headed the same direction. Everyone knows the pendulum is swinging away from VSG and RNY, as both become a very low calorie diet for life!

What problems led you to revise to DS?

DS is the gastric sleeve with rerouting of your duodenum, so it causes malabsorption. You could certainly eat garbage and lose weight with DS as I've seen others post, but that still wouldn't be good for your body. DS has a very high rate of malabsorption of nutrients and many are on vitamins/supplements besides just a Multivitamin, Vitamin d, Calcium and B12. Which are Vitamins have taken for years.

How is your eating any different with DS? You still have the same size stomach, right?

Who says the pendulum is swinging from VSG and RNY to DS ? Do you have any links for evidence based research on this ?

Why not go to the top and ask Alex Brecher? Maybe EM him.

There are also other support websites out there, such as obesityhelp.com and realself.com. Obesity help has a GREAT DS forum with vets who are more than happy to help and quite knowledgeable. Look up Valerie!

On another wls forum I found the same hostility to anyone who wants something different than the DS.

Odd. I wish them well.

Doesn't make sense, does it? The fact that VSG is part of the DS procedure.

The VSG is usually the first stage to DS, I was told by one gal she can eat whatever she wants, usually over 3000 calories a day since she doesn't absorb a lot. To me that seems unhealthy. Could it be what is being eaten?

I agree, if you're still eating high carb and high fat, even if you don'y absorb the calories and if food is fuel, how does DS make that kind of diet healthy?

Holy moly! If that's true, then the duodenal switch is the WLS choice for bingers.

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.
