New to LT. Banded 1 year...

Recommended Posts

Hi. I'm checking it out 'over here.' I've been on another site (OH) and I'm having a really hard time with the "my WLS is better than yours" thing going on over there. I really need a support group, and my local LB group only meets once a month and they stay restricted to certain topics. The online group thing has worked really well for me because it's there when I need it, and specific to the lap band.

I was banded June of last year and have lost 70lbs. I'm still pretty far from goal, but I'm really getting the hang of the band and feel well on my way! I actually don't even know what my "goal" weight is! I would rather have a goal size of a 12/14, or even a 10. I've been obese my entire adult life and really don't know where I'm comfortable as far as weight as size goes... I figure I'll just keep loosing until I'm happy with it and not fixate on a number but on what feels good.

My biggest hurdles so far have been realizing how important it is to get regular fills... getting and staying at good restriction. I've also had a lot of realizations about what food is to me and what it feels like to be "not hungry" instead of stuffed full. I loved that feeling, and I'm learning that not only will I never feel that again, but that it's a good thing that I don't strive to feel Thanksgiving stuffed anymore. I didn't realize that feeling that way was not what satiety was.

Now I have great restriction and I'm actually struggling with "what does hungry feel like?" I will go too long without eating, then have a headache and be a raving maniac! I'm trying to get into the 'habit' of eating regularly, going so far as setting my alarm for meal times. This has just been in the last 10 days or so, since my last fill. I think once I get used to what I have to do to get the right nutrition in, I'll be really doing well. I can't eat hardly anything in the morning, but by afternoon and evening I can have a 1/2- 1 cup of chicken salad and be 'full' without any trouble getting it all down.

So that's me...

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
