12 Days post op and left shoulder pain?

Recommended Posts

I've sailed through every part of my surgery no pain from incisions no vomiting but I have terrible pain in my left shoulder that is ok mostly during the day but at night time it's terrible I am getting up out of bed at like 3-4am because of the pain of laying in bed.

Anyone else experienced this and if so what did you do to overcome it and how long does it last? Many thanks for any replies

I felt it in my left clavicle. I put a heating pad on it and reclined in the recliner rather than bed. That made it possible to sleep. Others have said walking around (which no one wants to do at 3:00 AM) and taking Gas X helps. It will pass! :)

Left shoulder pain I think could also be a sign of a leak. Please call your doctor and just let them know what's going on.

It usually means gas shortly after surgery, and is very common.

I know what it is. I experienced it myself. Ive experienced it before on any procedure where they put air in the stomach for blowing it up to do surgery! this is what it is. The air goes places and will settle like in your chest or in your back or shoulder. Usually its in my shoulder. So the pain in the shoulder is the WORST. it feels like a heart attack in the shoulder. THEY SAY if you walk, that will help take away the air in your stomach/shoulder/where-ever. But I dont know if that works. It slowly goes away, but I'm on my 3rd week post-op and I guess I had that shoulder pain for lets see - 2 weeks straight. I kept saying "when the heck is this going to stop?" thing is, it slowly turns into "just when you reach down" then "just when you reach down really far" to "just occasionally." It will go away.

I'm experience it horribly. I have found that by standing up and putting my hands on the bed and pressing down letting my head drop and relax that I feel a release in the pressure. It hurts worse for about 5 seconds and then there is an immediate release. I stay in that position as long as I can and then when I stand straight up, I burp and the pain goes away temporarily.

Hope this helps someone. It's helped me quite a bit.

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.

Neat you have a pic of this day! I was sooo happy to get my surgery. It was well worth it! And I'm not even near my goal. I had surgery Dec. 2!
