Pre-surgery diet woes

Recommended Posts

Ugh. I'm supposed to be sleeved October 22nd, and the pre-surgery diet is killing me. The doc has me on a modified Atkin's diet to decrease the size of my liver and I've been on it for two weeks now and I hate it. I'm hungry constantly (I keep myself busy with stuff to ignore it) and I have absolutely no energy. It's so frustrating. Has anyone else had to do a modified Atkin's diet before surgery? How did you get through it?

I had two mottos when doing my pre-op diet. "Grin and bear it" and "shut up and do it"

It sucks, no way around it.

I had to do that. What got me through it was Pork rinds (has 9 grams Protein and NO carbs) and string cheese. Also mushrooms. I love love love mushrooms so I'd have hamburger and mushrooms, or spaghetti sauce and meat balls over mushrooms. Just get creative and look up recipes online

Oh, I totally agree. I just wish I wasn't so darn tired all the time. It's making it hard to do exercise and concentrate on the schoolwork I need to do.

Oooh, that sounds good. I love mushrooms and actually just had ground beef and mushrooms tonight! I didn't think of putting spaghetti sauce on them, though. I'll have to try that.

mezzomaybe,

What I did when I ate meals was to drink A lot of non-caffeinated liquid, stuff myself with non-starchy vegetables and then eat the low-fat Protein. If you take the Water out of it--it's some what the reverse of what you'll do AFTER WLS--except you don't stuff yourself with anything after WLS. The vegetable's Fiber and the Water slow the digestion process and keep you fuller longer.

Getting off of carbs and sugar is an absolute bugger when your stomach is normal. You've still got the hunger hormone Grehlin (spelling?) kicking big time telling you are hungry all the time. Keep up the good fight, I know it's incredibly hard. Try to drink as much water as you can between meals and make sure you get as much sleep as you can. Being tired makes fighting temptation a lot more difficult.

Kathleen

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
