When does weight loss begin?

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

Just got home from hospital yesterday after having VSG. Feeling pretty good, moving around well, following post-op diet to a T. I know it's typical to gain a little weight while in the hospital. I gained about 3 lbs. When does the weight loss start?

Immediately : ) You're only going to be getting a few hundred calories a day for a while. So you can count on that needle on the scale to start moving immediately. Drink as much Water as you can and you will take off that 3lbs pretty fast. I also gained 3lbs while in the hospital, they push the i.v. fluids, it was gone in 2 days time. I lost 11lbs in the first 2 weeks. I'm now out 2 weeks and 3 days and I'm down another 2lbs. Good luck!

I would have loved to only picked up 3 lbs. I gained 12 lbs of fluids in the hospital. Literally overnight I dropped 7 of it though. The first few weeks are usually pretty rapid. Then you might slow down and/or stall out for a bit, but that is the body adjusting. The losses will pick up again once the body adjusts.

chalk it up to the major fluids they pump into you during and after surgery. you will notice a change in a few days. my best advice is stay OFF that scale for at least 10-14 days post op and you will really be amazed once you get on it.

i became scale obsessed until i finally learned that this journey is not a sprint, it is a long marathon and my end result is most important...

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
