Pangie 1 Posted August 27, 2014 I work as a Secretary. I don't lift anything heavy and spend most of my time reading and typing/data entry. How long will I have to be off of work. I have heard that people take 2-4 weeks off and are still in bad shape after 6 weeks.?? I have had several surgeries in my life and never took as long to heal as most. Think.. i had a hysterectomy (abdominal) back to work in 3.5 weeks. Doc said most people are out for 6 weeks. I don't really want to be out more than 5 work days. Cant wait to hear your input!! Rogofulm 2,440 Posted August 27, 2014 I'd recommend taking one-and-a-half to two weeks off if you can. You'll still be healing, but you should be feeling much better by then. And in the unlikely event of complications, you'll be glad to have the time.

kd5wzr 108 Posted August 27, 2014 I work in IT. I took off one week. I think that returning to normal as soon as possible was far more beneficial to me than sitting around the house for an extra week.
Paloma68 31 Posted August 27, 2014 I had surgery Wednesday and returned to work Monday. Other than being a little tired, I was fine. Tiredness came from liquid only diet and no real fuel going into body. I increased yogurt and it helped.
almosthome 91 Posted August 27, 2014 I would not have been able to work a week post-op; it took 2 1/2 weeks for me to feel moderately functional again. My surgeon recommends planning for at least 3 weeks off; you can always decide to return earlier, right?
woo woo 872 Posted August 27, 2014 I am taking 5 days off (desk job also but from home). Would you have the option to leave early if you ended up feeling overtired? If so, I'd go for it and try to get back out there after the one week off. 6 weeks to return to a seated, desk job seems extremely excessive to me, but everyone's different. jaylove12 2 Posted August 27, 2014 I took 5 days off. My Doctor wasn't happy and kept insisting I take at least 2 weeks. But after those 5 days I was ready to come back. I've had the easiest recovery also. No problems, no vomiting, keeping everything down, easy transition to mushy foods, it's all been wonderful. (I'm even down 18 lbs in 2 1/2 weeks) But I sit at a desk and have the opportunity to walk around, not lift heavy things, drink plenty of fluids... I told my dr that if I needed more than a week, I'd let my work know...but I was sleeved on a Thursday and came back to work Tuesday with no problems. (I do, however, recommend wearing either a dress or something that will cover scars because pants will move up and down over the scars from surgery!!!) Honestly? LOL. I was in the hospital less than 24 hours, also had hernia repair, took one dose of Hydrocodone when I got home, drove to the grocery store and walked around 2 days later. Shopped the mall 5 days later. I could have been at my job in ? 4 days, but just retired lol. I am 68 and I hope you have it as easy as I did. Just do not lift anything. Good luck! stacielynntate 88 Posted August 28, 2014 I had surgery on Wed back to work Monday (part-time that week after) I work a desk job and I am also able to work from home. I found I didn't have 100% of my energy till about 4 weeks out so it was had to get in a full day of work sometimes.
BG- 8 Posted August 28, 2014 I only took 5 days off. Surgery on Monday, returned to work full-time (60 hours) the following Monday. I have an office job, so wasn't concerned about lifting or being on my feet or anything of the sort. I was able to get up and walk around as often as I wanted/needed and my energy was fine. My doc recommended two weeks, but didn't object to me returning after 1 week as long as I felt okay. Stay hydrated, get all your Protein in and walk around, and you should be okay - barring any complications after surgery.
finallyfree101 39 Posted August 29, 2014 I have a desk job and only took a long weekend holiday 4 days July 3rd was my sleeve date and I went back to work the following Monday. It depends on how well you recover and handle post-op changes. I had no problems and was very fortunate. Good Luck
Cris in Miami 9 Posted August 29, 2014 I also have an office job. I am taking a full two weeks. My body needs to heal.
Tammylb 174 Posted August 29, 2014 If I had too I could have went back to work in two weeks, but Sitting up in a chair was uncomfortable for me . As my stomach was healing from the inside I would get sharp pains and the only comfort was to stand and walk around. I took 4 weeks off .
BetterNai88 54 Posted August 30, 2014 I have a question about time off also. I work mostly at my desk but it's definitely high stress working on automobile total loss claims. I also am the office notary so when customers come in to take care of claims I'm up and down doing that. Personally I'm the single mom of a 4 year old, my mom will be able to come the day before surgery Weds. but has to leave Sunday realistically how much time should I take off. I'd rather have too much and go back early then not have enough.
