Hi everyone. I was banded on March 21, 2007 by Dr. Bonomo in Chicago. I am 63 years old and on Cobra which would have run out before they would pay for surgery. I paid for it myself, $13,000.00 This was most of my retirement savings but the best money I every spent. Since I was 5' 2" and weighed 347, he made me go through a 16 week weight loss program at the hospital. I lost 27 lbs and then he agreed to do the surgery. That was 6 weeks ago and I lost another 26 lbs. I've only had one fill. I was due for another this week but I'm having a little trouble with the insision on my side. I eat 2 ounces of either ground turkey, chicken, tuna, salmon, white fish, and ham. With this I have baby food vegetables and fruit. I love baby food. I eat egg sugstitutes, turkey bacon and cream of wheat. I'm satisfied with the 6 to 7 ounces total per meal and don't miss the junk food. I have a long, long way to go, 53 down and at least another 140 to go.

Hi Moni,

I was glad to see your age. I never see people near or over my age posting. I am 64 and had been wondering if my age would be against me in recovering and having success in weight loss. I am 5'2" too. I am going through the final stages of preparing for surgery. Keep in touch

can someone please help me understand how to use this site. I don't know where to go to post a message and don't know how to get the ticker under my messages. I haven't been logging on because I just don't know how to work it. Thanks

Welcome and great job losing so much already. There is a thread that tells you exactly how to put the ticker into your signature. I will be self pay as well. 16,000.

Thank you for trying to help me but I still can't seem to get it right. I've been sitting here for 2 hours trying to get my ticker into my signature. I keep following the instructions but can't seem to do it. I give up!

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
