New start to a new ME

Recommended Posts

I am considering the lap band surgery. I have done my cosult w/my dr. I have had my psych eval. All I need now is my letter of recommendation from my PCP, and my eval w/a nutritionist. If everything goes well I will have my letter of recom tomorrow (please oh please)

Most people think I do NOT need this surgery as I hear "Oh please you are not that big, you can do it on your own" Well these people do not know all of my health situation. Im 34 and already on diabetic meds, told I have high cholesterol but was given no meds to help control it. My father (may he RIP) died at 47 from a full blown heart attack, he also had diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol. I do NOT want to go down the same road. I have two babies that NEED me.

With the Lords Grace I will everything I need and have this surgery done!!

Anyone w/any advice please feel free to share it with me

Thank you and good luck to all who have had the surgery and to those who might have it.

The decision to get the lap band changed my life. Yes I'm am only 4 months in.... but.... Most everyone on both sides of my family is obese, diabetic, or have other weight related issues. I am 25 and have been "big" my entire life. I have tried diets, fads, gyms, and medications. Nothing has worked for me. I have found a new begining with the lap band. Yes, even at 4 months in. I am almost 70 lbs down from the day I walked into the center; I feel AMAZING! I follow my doctors instructions and I listen to my body. Now, I have energy to play with my children, I feel confident about myself, and I am so so so much more happy than I have been in many years. Good luck to you on your journey, only you know what is best for you, accept the changes and the unchanged through this process. It's not always what you expect, but sometimes your not expecting what is to come. Ask questions, lots of questions. Knowledge is power. And you can totally do this! Good luck!

Welcome to the forum. Lean on us for anything. Lots of experience and knowledge on this forum. It's never a substitute for your own doctor's advice but there are some things even doctors don't understand since they've not been banded.

Most advice will be in good spirit but don't be surprised if some of us don't sugar coat our advice. Sometimes you just need a kick in the butt ya know :P

You just have to remember that you are doing this for YOU!! I struggled with the decision for a long time, wondering why I couldn't lose the weight on my own like 'normal' ppl. I have finally accepted that I need help to be the best version of ME that I can. My application was submitted today for insurance approval. Just awaiting a surgery date. Good luck in your journey!!!

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
