I didn't know where else to post this - so sorry if it's in the wrong forum.

For those of you who were on BCP before surgery, did you have to use alternate methods of prevention after surgery? The PA I've been seeing for my 3-month pre-op visits told me she wanted me to stay on them to prevent pregnancy for a year after surgery, but when I saw my surgeon today, he told me that hormones will fluctuate once the weight starts coming off and BCPs aren't reliable. The PA and the surgeon both work the same office and have been fairly consistent with each other, so I was a little confused.

I was just wondering if any of you ladies stayed on your BCP after surgery and/or did you find they were not effective?

Thanks!

I haven't had my surgery yet, but I was told to stay on mine right through surgery, but use a back-up form of birth control for the first month or so post-op. I know birth control pills can be less effective in bypass patients, since bypass is a malabsorption procedure, but I hadn't heard of it being a concern with sleeve patients.

Thank you, Jamie, for responding! :)

I think we will use a back-up method in the beginning just to be on the safe side. We want a baby, but not too soon after surgery!

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.
