Dragonsmate 107 Posted August 26, 2014 So I am about 6 1/2 months out from surgery, feel great, have tons of energy and I am not doing anything different...so. I was curious if anyone around my, ah, age, has experienced increasing hot flashes while losing weight? I have lost about 86 pounds total, and over the past 2 weeks, it is as if an internal switch was flipped and I am literally having hourly flashes (or as mother called them, "power surges"). I know fat cells have estrogen in them and obviously as we lose weight, estrogen is naturally depleted from them but good god-this is pretty annoying...well, and if truth be told, also amusing Don't get me wrong, I will trade weight loss for hot flashes any day but I just noticed a significant increase...could be timing...could be that summer is finally here in Texas, but these episodes happen in the house where my husband like it quite arctic and I avoid the Texas heat like the plague... Anyhoos, thought some of you might get a chuckle and some may have had similar experiences so I thought I would toss it out there and see Have a great day all! MichiganChic 3,262 Posted August 26, 2014 I didn't have that. I got cold almost immediately (and since it was winter in Michigan, you can imagine why) and have stayed cold since. I drive my family crazy keeping the house temperature pretty warm, even in the summer.
Katcloudshepherd 630 Posted August 26, 2014 Dragonsmate, I had the surgery at 48 and was already starting menopause when I had the surgery. I am officially now menopausal, since I haven't had a period in over a year, going on two years. I have occasional "personal summers" but THANK GOD they haven't been too severe. I remember my mother's and I hope I don't get to experience the same kind of "power surges" she had. She would turn bright red and just start sweating. Too bad that "power surge" can't be harnessed in some way . You had your surgery in February and you've already lost 86 pounds. WOW! That's very impressive. I agree about the Texas heat. It's been triple digit and I am so ready for the fall cool-down. We're supposed to get a "cold" front through and the temperature is going to drop down to 97--man I better get my sweaters ready--NOT . At least now I don't sweat as much as I used to! All this talk about sweating is making me thirsty , Kathleen
par1959 470 Posted August 26, 2014 As a guy I dont get hot flashes, but like others I cant stay warm and like to be super toasty. Just can get enough blankets on the bed.
Dragonsmate 107 Posted August 27, 2014 I am 47 and prior to weight loss surgery, I would rarely have a hot flash but literally over the past 2 weeks, it is every day, several times a day-gawd. ...I wonder if you burn calories with hot flashes...hmm.
