I'm 13 months out, started at 315 now 265. I have to eat more than my body wants to get my Protein and calories where my nut recommends. I have been maintaining my weight for several months. I'm thinking of just listening to my body and eating less even though I won't get the recommended protein. Is anyone else doing this and what have been your results?

Hi Hannah,

I'm only 4.5 months out. I had a very difficult time eating in the beginning so I wasn't getting my recommended amounts of Protein and Water. I wasn't losing weight like I wanted because of this. I started supplementing with more high Protein shakes instead of regular food. Maybe you might do better if you drink your Protein. I hope your situation changes soon. Good luck!

Talk to your nutritionist about the consequences of not getting enough Protein before you make this decision.

In my personal history, not since this surgery, but on various "diets" before, I would end up anemic, or lose my hair, and/or stop getting my periods, etc.

I like missbrown30's suggestion of using the shakes, that something I'll keep in mind if I find I can't eat enough Protein.< /p>

Buy the Syntrex nectar and add it to Water no carbs and high protein. I count it towards water and Protein. I am totally exceeding my protein quota and stick to 800 cal. ( I like the fuzzy navel the best it's a combination of orange and peach and taste great

Totally agree on the Syntrex Fuzzy Navel. It is awesome!.

Did I read correctly that you 1 year + 1month post surgery? What does your Doctor say about your progress? Are you eating lots of sugars? Do you drink enough fluids? When I get behind on fluids I notice the scale doesn't move. As soon as I get my fluids in, the scale starts dropping again.

My plan is 1200 calories, 3 meals, 1 snack, 60 grams Protein. No liquid calories. I get my fluids in, but in order to get to get the protein in I eat more often than my nut wants me to.

Ok - sooo many questions! I want to help - please don't misunderstand my questions for anything but trying to be helpful:

  • When you say you have to eat more than your body wants - you are struggling to get in your calories/protein each day? What are you eating on a regular day? What are you drinking? Are you taking any medications that might interfere with your weight loss? You said your plan is 1200 calories - are you eating 1200 calories? If less, how much less? Which leads me to my next question...
  • Are you logging on My Fitness Pal or some other food/calorie logging application/Log? It can really help - they say that people who estimate their calories are incorrect by 25% - you could be eating 1500 or more calories. You could be eating 900 calories...
  • Are you exercising? I find that when I do at least an hour of either heavy duty home chores (Like laundry up and down the stairs with heavy loads) or gardening, or vacuuming, the weight comes off the next day. Even if it is light chores or a walk during the week and the heavy stuff on the weekends. This weekend I went to a BBQ, spent 4 hours on my feet and played ping pong with the men for 30 mins and the next day the scale went down again. I have always felt that activity is a better way to get the scale moving than under eating. Especially if you believe the "Starvation Mode" argument.

At 2.5 months I am just only able to get in 800 calories - they say at 3-4 months I should be up to 1000 and 1200 by my one year anniversary, some days it is easy and others it is hard. Trying to get your Protein 100% from food (meaning no Protein shakes) can make it even harder - your sleeve says no more! @@missbrown30 is right when she says get your protein in with a shake (or even a bar)! I drink one shake a day - or if I have Breakfast with my family I will blend it with a ton of ice in the evening to have an icy treat. I keep bars in my purse, half bar meets my snack requirements and gives me a boost of protein when I find myself with bad food options.

What would you say is the reason you have stalled at 50 lbs at 13 months? We are all in the same boat here - you can share and maye we can get to the bottom of this together...

I use my fitness pal. I've varied my calories from 900 to 1400, changed my exercise, limited carbs. I've tried a lot of different things, nothing seems to help

Get your protein through your very low cal high Protein Drinks like the Syntrex I suggested. It is easier and better for you than eating extra food

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
