My mother doesn't think I'm losing enough!

Recommended Posts

I was sleeved 6/26/14 & down 35lbs. I know I could probably lose more if I did more exercising than just walking. I isn't mean to get defensive when she said what she thought but I did. How am I to handle this in the future? I have followed my plan....

Were you losing 1/2 pound a day before your surgery???????

Seriously? Your mother is a WLS expert?

Keep doing what you're doing. Make sure you're getting in ALL your Protein, ALL your Water. Gradually increase the amount of exercise you do -- without injuring yourself (that would set you back, eh?).

And tell your mother to back off.

Congratulations on your FABULOUS weight loss!

Not that I'd presume to tell you what to say EVER, but this is essentially what I told my own mother:

Dear Mum, I feel so much more determined and excited to work hard on my goals when I have positive encouragement and support! If I get to a time when my doctor or I am concerned about results or progress and I need to vent - I know you'll be there for me. But for now and in the future I need you to stay fully positive about my working so freaking hard on this goal and my weight loss, and unless you can do that - we just should not talk about it at all.

Good points! My mother has been my #supporter so it threw me when she said it - out of love of course! I have to support the fact I am changing & my family is going through this journey too.

Will I always have my defensive 'wall of fat' up?

I totally get this and can relate. I have a sister who had the sleeve done six years ago. She continually talks about how I eat more than she ever ate at this point. She said she lost it a lot faster. Most of the family thinks she is unhealthy and doesn't get her Protein in.

I had my sleeve done on July 8, 2014. I have lost 29.1 lbs so far. I am excited about my progress, but she does make it hard. On the other hand, I have two other sisters who are super supportive and say nice things.

Stay positive and remember we are all different!

Flip the script on her. Her comments are precisely why people judge WLS and think it's the easy way out; everyone wants to believe the weight will just magically fall off.

Now would be a good time to raise the point that it will be YOU that does the work to lose the weight. It isn't a magic fix. If in the future someone else decides to say something like that to you or about you, she'll be your biggest defender!

You are right on with the average. Even if you worked out (unless your doing like 6hrs a day), you may not lose faster anyway. The body will only loose what it will lose when it wants. Unfortunately. :)

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
