Question right after surgery, how did you sleep?

Recommended Posts

Howdy,

I am 18 days away (SEPT. 10!!!) and have been living on this forum, but not this section yet.... I was curious after your surgery when you got home, how was your sleeping? did you sleep best on your side, flat on your back, propped up, elevated legs? very curious. wanted to make sure I was the most comfortable after my big day. Thanks for all the input and tips or tricks I should try!!!

I was propped up for the first 2 weeks. As my incisions healed I was able to lay on my sides. I found during the day sitting in my chair with legs up I get better sleep then In my bed at night.

Wished I had known, I would've bought a recliner or a hospital bed. My bed was the enemy the first two weeks. But everyone is different. If I ever have my desired Tummy Tuck, the most comfortable recliner will be delivered to my bedroom before I sign on the consent line.

I am pre-op but this is a concern of mine. I have a hard enough time getting in bed now and can't imagine being able to do so after surgery. Fortunately, i was able to find a used bariatric recliner so I am all set!

I slept normally from day one....flat on my back or on either side both in the hotel bed and my waterbed. It was about three weeks, though, before I could sleep on my stomach because I felt so bloated.

This is Day Five.

sleeping great! I'm tired at night, but not badly so -- just feel ready to sleep.

I'm still in the recliner, but it's a very comfy recliner. Keeps me on my back, for one thing, and feet are the same elevation as my head (maybe 3" lower).

Hubby will be glad when I come back to bed though.

sleep was rough for me until I healed up some. It got progressively better, but I wasn't sleeping well until maybe week 3 or 4. I'm a stomach sleeper, and I was stuck on my back the first few weeks, which for some reason, made my tailbone hurt like hell. I was propped up on pillows. I'm sure a recliner would have been nice, but there's simply no room in my apartment.

I slept great on my back from day one. I moved to my side about a week out and feel totally normal now (surgery was Aug 12th). That being said, I think I'm one of the few people on here who had virtually no gas that I could detect, and so I'm not sure how that impacts things. My incisions were very tender, but felt very minor by day five! Good luck!

I slept on a recliner the first week. After that I moved to our bed and tried to sleep on my back.It was tough as I am normally a side sleeper

I sleep on my side. When I got home from the hospital after two days, I put my body pillow on my tummy and eased myself over on my side and slept like I normally do. I was also able to ease myself onto my side in the hospital. I didn't really sleep there though. Too many nurses and orderlies coming in and out of my room to take my blood sugar every few hours and change my catheter bag and add in new IV Fluid.

Maybe I'm a overachiever. LOL.

awesome.... it is nice to know what range of sleeping I might face. I do have a nice recliner, so I can do that for a week or so.

sleep has eluded me. I was sleeved on August 13th and I have not had a good night's sleep yet. My partner is a gastric bypass patient from several years ago and she said sleeping for hard the first couple of weeks. My sides are sore and bruised so it hurts to be on them, forget about laying on my stomach, and I can't breath on my back thanks to the continual gas pain in my left abdominal area and left shoulder. Right now I am surviving on daytime cat naps when I can get them in on my recliner but even that position sucks after a while. Right now my two biggest problems are lack of sleep and lack of Protein. When I can home from the hospital on the 15th, I was not having protein problems but after a week of drinking Protein Shakes and eating Yogurt I about to puke. I can smell a Protein Shake and get sick. I am just trying to stay hydrated as possible. Any ideas on how to help with my protein issue? I hope my sleepless nights will not last too much longer.

Try unflavored Protein in broths and Soups. Not sure if you are allowed coffee or not, but I scoop unflavored into my iced coffee with a little sugar free vanilla Syrup. Make sure if you are adding it to Soup, to do so after you let it cool for a few minutes so it doesn't curdle.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
