Jumping through hoops... Check!

Recommended Posts

I have been overweight my entire life, first memory around 11 of someone saying I was overweight or fat. Thankfully, I have always played sports and exercised. I have no "skinny" pictures. I am always the biggest person in family photos. I have always shopped at plus size. For 25 years I have fluctuated between the same 45 pounds, 220 to 265. (One time I got down to 217). In 2011, ate age 39, 1st attempt for insurance approval. It was denied. The insurance company said I was a healthy, morbidly obese person. Then (drumroll please)...... Insurance company requirements change to national standard as of Jan. 1, 2014. Over 40 BMI only qualifies. On 1/1/14, at 1:00 am I submitted the paperwork. Jumped through the insurance hoops; 6 month doctor supervised weight loss program, main requirement to not gain even 1 pound. Thankfully I was at my 265 high weight. (1 st appt. Jan 18 :::April 24 - 2nd appt. July 15th - 3rd and final appt. lost a total of 7 1/2 pounds).....then wait for insurance referral to bariatric surgeon... surgeon appt...(July 30)... Surgeon gives stamp of approval for gastric bypass. Surgeon already booked out 'till end of Sept. 8/6 - gall bladder ultrasound... 8/7- psych eval and EKG. Psych eval needed for final insurance approval. Finally, 8 months later, I have a date..... Oct. 7th. Feeling relieved.

It has been a long time for me as well. My surgery date is Oct. 8. Although I was approved the first time. I feel like it has been along time coming. My first appt. Was Sept20. I applied in July 13. So good luck to you.

Right are you nervous? I want the date to hurry up and get here but, after all the stumbling blocks I've had (and its' the little things that snowball into a big thing) I start to feel like maybe this is a sign. By my calculation I should of had my surgery in May. Sometimes I feel that all these stumbling blocks will only make me appreciate the surgery more. Some members are so dedicated right from the start. I feel that I will be a lot better when get my paperwork letting me know whats happening step by step.

Totally with you on that. Don't have a date yet. I see the NUT and social worker again on the 4th and then will get the referral to surgeon. I have lost 9 lbs since seeing them on the 13 of Aug and they told me that I had to show a loss. A good piece of advice was to pretend that I had the surgery already with regards to eating. I know sounds severe, but have been eating healthy choice meals since then for a calorie count if about 1100 a day. Seems to be working. Am concentrating on eating slowly and that seems to be helping too. I think I might be addicted to Water now too!

Well if you could be addicted to anything.. Water would be a pretty cool thing to end up with. That is great advice about just starting now with how you will eat after; the chewing slowly and such. I have not been able to gain 1 pound since Jan. So I use my fitness pal to track everything. Thank you.

Hello walkin'onsunshine, We are only 1 day apart from our surgery. So we'll hopefully, be able to compare our surgical adventures. It will be nice to have someone to talk to during this journey. We'll be able to compare our pre-op instructions. So good luck to the both of us.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
