So, I called the Doctor to see if we could do my surgery during the 12 weeks thatI have to take off of work for my leg issues, since I can get around fairly well with the walker. They told me that I would need the Ortho that's treating me to okay it, since I would be standing for nearly 2 hours during the surgery. I had no idea that I would be STANDING! Is this common practice? I thought it would be a traditional, lay-on-the-gurney-and-enjoy-the-deep-sleep kind of procedure. I guess you learn something new everyday!

I assume at some point I was standing, because when I got on the operating table they put a platform on my feet and strapped the legs/ankles to the board. My doc does the leak test during surgery, so I thought that was a part of it. I don't know how long I was in the upright position.

I don't believe I was standing. I thought I was lying on a gurney. I was wheeled to the OR on a gurney AFTER they had given me a shot and I was out cold. I was under anesthesia so I truly don't know for sure. If you were standing, you'd have to be strapped to the bed somehow?

I don't know about having the weight loss surgery if you are having another one. It took the use of my legs to get me out of the hospital bed to walk. My torso was sore and I needed all the strength my legs had to walk. However, I remember the hospital had walkers to assist with walking after surgery--if I needed one.

I hope what ever way you decide to do it--it works out well.

Kathleen~

At this point, I am just to avoid any weight on the left leg for 12 weeks, due to osteo-necrosis in the knee. So I was hoping to do the surgery while I was off work-and since my deductible has been paid up for the year-but since I have to be standing during surgery, we have to put it off until November, assuming my knee/leg is strong enough at that point. I'm praying I don't need to have the knee replaced, and that the bone will regenerate because being off work for so long is already making me nuts!

LisNLasVegas~

Thanks for your input! I guess that makes sense~I just never thought about it! I thought all surgery was done horizontally.

I've never heard of ANY surgery where they stand u up for the whole surgery. I know mine was lying on the table. I stood during my leak test the next day. Can't imagine how they keep u from flopping like a rag doll while under general anesthesia and standing. And how difficult it would be for the dr to operate on ur stomach while standing.

Doesn't make sense to me. Maybe someone can explain?

Could you ask your surgeon to clarify because doing this surgery standing makes no sense at all. Not to mention my surgery took less than an hour.

Hmm, that does sound odd. I've watched several sleeve surgeries on YouTube and they were all lying flat. I'm going to ask my doc when I see him next.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Your so close now! It's gonna be great :) Wishing you a speedy recovery and looking forward to seeing how it goes!

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
