Protein drink choices post surgery

Recommended Posts

My surgery is about 2 weeks out. Can I have a sampling of what you drank (if that's all you did) the first 2-3 weeks after surgery? I know my nutritionist will give me something to go by at my last appointment, but I figured everyone was about the same. Wanting to do some "sampling" to see what will taste good so I won't have to send the husband out for the unknowns. Thanks in advance!!

HI

I AM HAVING MY REVISION FROM BAND TO RNY 8/27/14. I GOT A BUNCH OF DIFFERENT DRINKS/SHAKES. CARNATION INSTANT Breakfast sugar free. I COULDN'T FIND IT IN THE STORES BUT Amazon SUPPLY HAS A GREAT DEAL $37 FOR 8 PACKS OF 8 MAKING 64 INDIVIDUAL SERVINGS. I GOT THE VARIETY. I GOT Atkins ADVANTAGE DAILY, & SLIM FAST DAILY HIGH Protein, BOTH THE ALREADY MIXED & THE powder. THE DEITIAN ALSO SAID TO BUY NON FAT INSTANT MILK TO ADD FOR EXTRA Protein IN EVERYTHING. Walmart WAS THE CHEAPEST FOR ME. I STARTED MY WEEK OF PRE-OP WED 8/20. SO I HAVEN'T DRANK THAT MUCH, BUT FOR ME. ALL OF THEM ARE OK. THE CARNATION I'LL LIKE BETTER WHEN I CAN ADD banana TO IT AFTER THE SURGERY. SLIM FAST IS MY FAVORITE SO FAR. HOPE IT HELPS

I use Jay Robb whey Isolate Protein powder in vanilla or chocolate. I find it smooth tasting.

You purchase a sample pack from the company of all the flavors that it comes in.

I use sugar free Torani syrups in them to give a different taste. Torani Syrups come in many, many flavors.

I use at times PB2 Peanut Butter powder that also comes in chocolate Peanut Butter powder too. Very tasty and adds some more Protein to your shake.

I also use at times Walden Farms chocolate, caramel or marshmallow dips to add to my shakes. I like these and they are made with Splenda.

Your nutritionist also will probably give you a list of protein powders or premade shakes that are exceptable to them for your food plan.

I suggest also get the sample pack from unjury of their shakes and chicken Soup. I know my sister likes their products.

Good luck and best wishes.

Unfortunately what tastes good to you pre-surgery may not afterwards.

I got lucky in that the Premier Protein shakes that I drink were my fave before surgery and still taste good after.

But I also stocked up Isopure before surgery as it tasted just fine, but afterwards couldn't stand it. I ended up giving it away to someone in my support group.

So while the idea of testing them out before hand is good, be cautious as you may have to repeat the whole process again afterwards.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
