Vertical Sleeve Tube cut so narrow that stomach looks like 2 small stomachs

Recommended Posts

Has anyone had a vertical sleeve and the sleeve was cut so narrow that it looks like 2 seperate stomachs with a tube in between? This is the case with someone I know. When reading a little about it, it was said that a 2nd surgery would probably need to be done using a baloon to stretch out the vertical sleeve portion that looks like a tube. I also read that a conversion to the gastric bypass may need to be done if the first scenario fails. Is this something that can occur often? Or is this a case of malpractice? Please help!!!!!!! Any advice would be appreciated.

It happened to me, I was told I was my surgeons first mistake out of the 500 procedures he performed. It's been a tough four weeks to say the least.

Is there a visual representation of this somewhere? I'm curious.

This sounds pretty bad. I wonder how something like that even happens? If it's a matter of a mistake while cutting away the excess stomach, wouldn't the surgeon know right away? It doesn't sound like something they would discover later.

Thanks! It was found by doing a upper GI study. Worst case I will need a bypass. If I had the chance to do it over again I wouldn't choose surgery.

Hi Jenna1985, I'm so sorry for what you have been going through; I hope a resolution is found soon for you. I too was sleeved by synergy bariatrics in buffalo and I'm fortunate to say I've had no issues whatsoever thus far. Who was your surgeon, if I may ask?

Dr Caruana did mine. He came highly recommended by my primary and I love him. I would talk directly to him to fix this- he has so much experience and basically founded the procedure in our area. Hugs and prayers going out to you and pease keep us posted on your progress .

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
