Protein bars INSTEAD of shakes?

Recommended Posts

I had surgery on August 5th. I was able to get down a few shakes the first couple of days, but over the past week NOTHING has worked to where I can stomach them. I have tried MANY different kinds and added bananas and other products to them (suggestions from eggface) but just cant get more than a sip or two down. My question is can I just do Protein Bars instead and cut out the shakes all together? I have a call into my NUT but wanted to find out if anyone else had same issues and had alternate solutions??

Need help because I have not gotten in more than 10-20g of Protein a day in over a week and cant afford to be a bald headed fat girl who ends up in the hospital!! lol

Unfortunately it's to early for you to eat Protein bars I believe but to make sure contact your nutritionist and ask them what they think since you can't get in the protein with shakes.< /strong>

If they tell you it's okay the best one IMO is Quest Bars because they have no junk in them.

Good luck.

I totally hate Protein Shakes too. I don't drink them at all now but I do eat a Protein Bar once a day and I get most of my Protein from my meals. Once you are able to eat regular food try to get at least 15 grams of protein per meal. I also have reduced fat string cheese which is a great source of protein. Food Lion also have protein packs in the luncheon section. Only 190 calories and 15 awesome grams of protein.

Nut told me no on the bars...:(. Said to use unflavored in/on everything. There is no such thing as unflavored! It makes everything smell and taste like I added baby formula powder to it!!! I am just not going to worry about Protein until I am cleared for the bars. Not spending another dime on powder that I can't tolerate. I now have a GNC store in my kitchen!!!

I hate Protein Shakes as well. They leave such a bad taste in my mouth. I was able to find a Protein Powder that I could mix with just 4oz of liquid and I was able to tolerate it for a while.

You have to be very careful with Protein bars as some of them are just candy bars with protein powder sprinkled on top.

I use egg whites to help with my protein intake. I add them to any flavored drink. Powerade and egg whites seem to mix well together. However you must by egg whites that are intended to drink raw. Do not buy the ones at the grocery store. Mine are double pasteurized and meant for raw intake.

While you stomach is still healing you still need to get in your protein. It helps with healing and giving your body the fuel it needs to function.

I have problems with eggs when they are cooked still 2 years post op. They tend to sit heavy. Egg whites are different. You just add the egg whites to a flavored drink. You don't taste them. It sometimes changes the texture a little, but most people would not know they are in there.

Also try to find a Vitamin shop that will allow you to try the different shakes. Where I get my egg whites will mix up shakes for you to try them before you buy the entire container.

Protein is very important - you already mentioned the Hair loss. When it comes to the hair loss it takes your hair about 2 months to show the lack of protein you are getting now.

Please know I was you 2 years ago, and I know how hard it is. Don't give up - things will get better!

Wonder just how long it takes the stomach to heal up , I haven't had any good yet , just liquids and Jello or broth , but I'm in no hurry tho

Not sure when you had your surgery, but it is more than likely head hunger that you have not actual hunger. To figure that out - next time you have that hunger feeling drink Water. If your hunger feeling goes away than it is head hunger.

Yep I know that's what it is , and it's from being bored staying around the house , but I just had my surgery last Tuesday so it hasn't been a week yet .

Well I really haven't been hungry , I drink a lot of Water so I guess that keeps my pouch full

Big daddy wait til you start on solid food, its amazing how quickly you will get full. I'm full most of the time but have lost 75 pounds in 3 months.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
