Third week post op, weight loss stalled. Advice?

Recommended Posts

I am well into my third week post op, about to my fourth. My weight loss has stalled. I lost 11 lbs. during the first two weeks, but now the scale won't move. Anybody have a similar experience that can offer advice. I am getting my Protein in most days, but still nothing. Help!!!

Yup! Im almost 6 weeks post op, i had the 3rd week stall too, i lost 17 lbs only in my first month. But dont let that demotivate you. You're body is still getting used to the low amount of food and is still trying to store some. But it will eventually start burning the fat. Just stick to your doctors instructions and start walking, walking is what made the difference with me.

Virtually everyone stalls in or around the third week. It is completely normal and there is nothing you can do to prevent it or to "break" the stall other than let time pass. Follow your program, put the scale away for a while, and sooner or later you'll start losing again.

I stalled around the 3rd week too. It lasted more than a week. Google it. It is really common. I read an article about it. I am not sure that it is accurate or anything but it made sense to me. It said something about how when you start to restrict calories your body assumes this is a temporary thing and burns glycogen at first. For every pound of glycogen burned your body burns 4 lbs of Water. Around that third week your body realizes that this isn't a temporary thing and wants to store glycogen for emergency use again. So, for every pound of glycogen it stores you also store 4lbs of Water. That is why some people stall or even gain around the third week.

I am in the middle of the slump with you, I actually lost four pounds after a week of not losing anything and gained it right back that same night in Water weight. SO COMMON. I was freaking out like you, tormenting myself by weighing every day and just assume this - My body isn't going to manufacture its own calories so what I put in the tank is what I put in the tank. That unfortunately includes Water and the statements above about glycogen storage and gain / loss are spot on. Hold my hand while we get through this time, but know that we will.

You're only 3 weeks post-op. Follow the meal and beverage plan and keep your eye on the goal. Weight loss stalls are going to keep happening. I don't know how much weight you are trying to lose but I think most of us are shooting for at least 100 lbs. That is a lot of weight and it isn't going to just disappear overnight. You may be one of the people that averages over 20 lbs a month. I am not. I have averaged 11 lbs a month for 5 months now. I just went through a stall that lasted 6 weeks. It sucks but you have to be diligent. I weigh once a week. The damn thing was stuck at 252 for 6 weeks and then the other day it said 248. My BMI is getting ready to tip into the 20s. Happy song. I am hoping to be at goal by Christmas, but if I don't make it, I will have to keep trying. This sleeve is forever. Try not to worry so much and just let it happen. Good luck.

I had the same issue and had even gained a pound around the 3rd week but now that I've passed into my 4th I've lost 3-4 more. It is very normal for it to be happening. Be patient and you will see that the weight will start coming off, all our bodies are different even if we all got the same surgery..some will lose way more than others and that's ok because as long as you are losing weight or ounces each day is what counts. Good luck to you!

Thank you to everyone that has replied so far!!!!! I am overwhelmed by all of the support! It helps to know that this is common. Summertime friend.......you asked me how I was feeling and the answer is GREAT!!! I really have a lot more energy and am feeling just fine. Better than I have in a long time, so I know something is going right.

I will press on and keep doing what I need to and I am sure the weight will start coming off again.

THank you all for your responses!

Make your own chocolate milk....mix Premier Protein chocolate 1/2 and 1/2 with skim milk...loaded with Protein and way less sugar. It's one of my favorites.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
