I do not know what I experienced tonight with turkey. Turkey breast slices, small bites, long chews, nothing to drink it down. I was fairly hungry having only had one half of a shake today. After I took a few more bites, I swallowed and suddenly had a burst of hiccups. Have you see it when the dog/cat hacks up something, that heave-heave-heave thing they do? It was like that. After a few minutes I was so freaked out I ran outside and forced myself to throw up. It stopped. It felt like my stomach was sufficating.

What do you suppose happened?

This is the first time I tried turkey.

It sounds like you had the "classic" PB - Productive Burp. In other words, you "ralphed your heart out". Either the turkey was too dry, you ate too big a piece, meat too tough, or you did not chew quite enough. I hope you won't go through that again - good luck!

THAT was a PB? Oh gads. I think the turkey was too dry and also that I ate the third bite too quickly.

you're only banded 15 days and eating meat? Are you sure that's on your post-op diet?

It's not a PB if you make yourself sick, is it? And FWIW, I've *never* had a PB do anything like that. Were you able to breathe throughout the entire thing? Any pain to speak of? Did anything come up?

wow. sounds like a pb to me. i am just starting to feel the effects of a fill after just having 1.7 cc and i do that almost every day. i am having a hard time NOW adjusting to a fill and what will go down. i hate the slimy stuff...but it does make you think about what you are doing. why don't i ever have that FULL feeling. usually just feels stuck.

I won't be doing turkey again for some time. I had my mushy sweet potatoes and cheese and that went down fine.

Wasabubblebutt: Wow... sounds *really* early to be eating turkey. You likely still have swelling. Be sure to go back to liquids for a day or two to relieve the additional swelling.

I got really sick yesterday. Not just last night but during the afternoon.

You have to be extra careful with your pouch right now. Barfing/PBing, whatever you want to call it is especially dangerous right now. Honestly, you are on soft foods for a reason. According to your doc's website you should be on soft foods during healing. It will take a good 6-8 weeks just for the beginning phases of healing. You will continue growing adhesions for years to come. Right now, this time frame is critical.

Your doc doesn't say on his website to eat until something is a mush, he writes to stick to soft foods and gradually work up to solids after healing.

I know, it IS hard. But it is soooo important. Don't push the limits, it's just not worth it. Not only was yesterday painful and horrible, you could potentially have done damage to your band. Don't worry about weight loss at this point in time. This time frame isn't designed for weight loss, it is designed for healing. So if you have to bump up the mashed potatoes to prevent hunger making you want solids, do it. Better to gain a few pounds now vs. losing your band tomorrow.

When you want a piece of turkey today and you can't have it, don't think of it as that you can't have it. Think of it as though you can have it, just not today.

Remember, liquids today for your own sake.

Turkey is also one of the foods that people tend to have a problem with. So that might make it a double whammy. I remember... Thankgiving '05 I believe... posts left and right about all the problems that the turkey had caused.

Wow, I must not be very restricted; I ate turkey and cheese on a grilled bagel last weekend - the whole thing! And I've eaten steak - a 5oz. petitie fillet from a steakhouse, and a decent size ribeye at home - with no problems, either. I was banded 2/27, and have had two fills so far. I do not know what size my band is, but think I had 1cc in the first fill, and 1.5 in the second.

Anyone else having these experiences?

Thanks Bubble. This helps. I'm home, resting and on Water. I'm actually hungry. I could probably get by with mushy sweet potatoes from Boston Market which went down perfectly. The warmth of them felt good.

Honestly, that episode really freaked me out. I like what you said about "not now" to remove that sense of denial I am sometimes feeling. That is always a domino for diet failure for me. But the turkey hack really scared me. I knew instantly my stomach was not ready for it when I started yacking like that. It was like an out of body experience to see my body reacting in a way I'd never seen before.

Wheetsin I don't plan on going near turkey for a long time.

A 5 oz. steak? Ouch. That is all I can think.

Be verrrry careful that you are not pouch packing, or IOW... using your esophagus as an extended stomach.
