How has your husband/wife/SO fared during your WLS journey?

Recommended Posts

I just read your posting. It looks like you have lost a substantial amount of weight since July 14th, but you say in this posting that you "have fared very badly." Just curious as to how you are doing?

Hi. I am not doing very well. I am going back in for an endoscopy tomorrow. I posted a thread in post surgery. Endoscopy tomorrow thread.

I am hoping to get to the bottom of things and try to get well and feeling half way like a normal human being. =)

I'm not sure how much support my man will be. In the past if I was dieting he would offer me treats. Then if I was not watching what I ate he was asking why I was eating. It's taken him many years to finally put on some weight and he needs to eat constantly to maintain. He has told me he will be finished smoking by the time I get back from Mexico (surgery on sept 24). Not sure I want to deal with his mood swings when I'm going to have enough of my own.

That sounds like a rant but he's very supportive of my new stomach. I just think he doesn't realize I won't be his food buddy any longer. We've been on many adventures over the last 13 years and this will be no different. I know that people I associate with aren't going to change their eating habits just because I'm getting healthy!!

My husband was NOT supportive at first, but I didn't care. It's MY body, and it was time to do something about my weight. As I lost the first 30 lbs before surgery, he really started to understand that this was important. He also started cutting carbs and lost along with me. During surgery we was supportive and now that I've lost almost 90 lbs, he really appreciates my new body. We exercise together sometimes and in the bedroom dept he's happier than ever. Me too! In the beginning he mourned the loss of us eating out all the time. It was something we did as a couple. But now we have other things.

In the end, I think WLS will either break you apart or bring you closer together. I was scared of the first, but we made it through!

Hi all, my husband was apprehensive about me having the surgery initially due to me having a history of having 2 bleeding strokes. However once he received more information on how much the surgery will improve my health he has been nothing short of complete support. I have been on the preop diet and he has follow it too. He even scheduled a weeks vacation after the surgery to help me out! We are doing this together including going to Water aerobics three times a week. I'm blessed to have such a supportive husband!

This has been a roller coaster for my husband and I. He didn't want me to be sleeved bc he worried something bad would happen and it did (leak post op which almost killed me). It took us months and months to get through that ordeal and even now I'll never be a "normal" sleever as far as what my belly can handle.

It took him a long time to realize I can enjoy going out to eat by nibbling or just keeping him company. I think he felt I was being deprived when I didn't eat and he did. It also was really weird for him when I lost so much initially. He told me he didn't like it bc I didn't look the same and he loved me how I was.

Fast forward to today. Instead of food partners we are now gym partners 5x week. Both of us much healthier and happier. He loves helping me pick out new clothes to buy. Bless his heart, he thinks he is my fashion consultant. lol. While I am 15lbs from goal he's perfectly happy how I look now but he understands it's how I feel and what I want to achieve. So he's very supportive.

So I guess to sum it up, we've had our ups and downs specific to my sleeve but it truly has brought us closer together. ????

I have a very supporting husband. He went on a diet with me so together we limit carbs, exercise, and focus on other things rather then eating out in restaurants. He has always watched his weight and has been successful for years. He hated that I could not be as active as he was. He loves biking, walking, downhill skiing, and so forth. We have been married 40 years. He is beyond happy that I am now joining him on these activities. We walk every morning and evening and pull out the bikes when it is not too hot. This winter I am putting on my ski pants and going to hit the beginner slopes! I love this new life and I know he is over the moon as well!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
