Strange question.... (menstruation w/ surgery)

Recommended Posts

Will they still do the surgery if you’re menstruating?? Normally I change out my BC (ring) every 3 weeks so I skip my period (horrible cramps/cysts) but this month I totally spaced and started on the 17th. I quickly replaced it so it would stop but my body seems to be stubborn and hasn’t yet. My surgery is on Monday (YAY), so if it doesn’t stop by then will they cancel? I can’t think of any logical reason why they would, but I’m so afraid of getting the surgery canceled.

I read a few other posts from women who had theirs during surgery and it was no biggie. They were nervous but the surgeons and nurses have seen it all and don't care. I did read that you have to wear a pad and not a tampon but I think you should be just fine.

I don't think it will be a problem, but definitely ask your nurse. I was at the near end of my period when I had surgery last Thursday, and it was not an issue at all. It ended up lasting a few days longer than usual, perhaps because of the blood thinners (?). I definitely felt embarrassed, but no one cared or even mentioned it. And the benefit was that I didn't have to pee on a stick in pre-op! Best wishes!

Yeah, they absolutely don't care. In fact, you'll get some super cool mesh panties with a giant pad as your prize.

I was on my period the day I had my surgery too. Nobody really cared except me.. stupid period, always managing to come at inappropriate times...

Good to know. Of course being big thats always my biggest fear. luckily things are slowing down (probably stress related which is releived by all of you, thank you!) so hopefully it wont be needed.

I know your period comes right on schedule. In 2004, I was in intensive care because I got a blood clot. Just arrived when I was in the hospital and all my stuff was at home. They wouldn't let me leave. It was all Kotex pads until I got home.

Oh no! That must have been miserable. I skip mine so it was kinda ironic that I got it anyways and it's hanging on (spotting but still annoying)

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
