First Nutrition and Psych Appointments....the Ball is Officially Rolling!

Recommended Posts

Hi, everyone! I'm Shirl, and I just joined BariatricPal last night. I'm so glad I stumbled upon this site. My initial consultation was Aughust 14th, and today is my psych evaluation and first nutrition appointment. All of my clearance appointments are made (pulmonary, cardiac, and gastro) and all my ducks are in a row. My surgery date is set (November 7th). Things are going almost *too* smoothly. Even though my surgeon has assured me that they will fight for their patients, even going peer-to-peer, I'm still worried that Cigna's going to throw a spanner in the works and deny me. How do you deal with that worry? What gets you through the waiting game?

God bless!

Shirl

wow, i'm so jealous! my surgeon won't schedule the surgery until the insurance approves everything. i have everything done except the endoscopy and colonoscopy, which will be scheduled after my initial consult with the gastroenterologist this Friday, so i'm feeling very close (probably mid-October).

is there a reason that you fear they will deny you, Shirl? i don't have that worry because i have mondo comorbidities. do you have any? what's your BMI?

If you check the Cigna insurance requirement and verify that you have indeed met all the criteria, then you'll not have that to worry about.

I was very worried to due to weight history, but everything got approved, the surgery was on time, and I survived! It will be here before you know it!

Just start making lifestyle changes now if you can. It will make the transition to post-surgery that much easier!

Best of luck!

I think my worry stems from everything going so smoothly. I'm pretty much the poster child for Murphy's Law - whenever things go well I can almost guarantee something's going to take the wind out of my sails.

I do have comorbidities, pre-diabetes, fibromyalgia, herniated discs, underactive thyroid, PCOS. I think my BMI was around 44. I'm definitely a good candidate but you know how snarky insurance companies can be.

My psych evaluation and first nutrition went well! Nutrition.... ohmygravy, my head is spinning with info! I have to start changing my diet now. It'll be hard, but I just have to remember why I'm doing it.

God bless!

Shirl

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
