PBS special "The Mormons" made me furious!

Recommended Posts

I wonder something. Look at the horrific spelling of many posters. Loose, lose... 4-5 letter words and I am shocked at how many people can't spell a 4-5 letter word. Yet I don't recall seeing LDS members that can't spell simple words. Does this have to do with family environments? Actually raising their children vs. permitting schools and society to raise their children?

I have absolutely no respect for religion. I think it causes huge emotional problems for a great number of people to teach them there is no difference in myth/fact. When people are raised to fear not believing, that just isn't healthy no matter how you look at it. The manipulation and mind games that go with religion are without excuse and nothing but a method of control. But, I agree with you regarding the "family" concept. More should live this way and then perhaps children would learn to spell small words.

Fundamentalist Christians, on the average, tend to have less education, which probably accounts for the poor spelling. It does not mean they aren't as smart as anyone else. Let us not forget Al Gore and the famous "potato" incident.

<p>Something positive about religion = gives people something they need in their lives. There is something for them that religion satisfies.

Of course, so do some not-so-nice things.

And double of course, if we consider why it's needed in the first place, the entire idea could go right out the window.

I recall a group of believers that thought their leader was great too, you know... the folks found dead with quarters in their pockets.

Exactly.

And I am so tired of all the pandering and coddling of these groups that goes on because "it's their beliefs" when meanwhile they're busy oppressing other people and treating Gays like dirt and teaching women to be subordinate to men.

I was on the LDS site and under "Women In the Church" it's very clear that women have a certain "role" they are expected to fit into, and that role is limited. They can't hold the highest offices in the church and the role of "mother" is praised above anything else.

Oppression! Suppression! Little girls should NOT be subjected to this!

Little girls should be encouraged to be whatever they want to be and NOT be brainwashed that having children is their "ultimate role".

It's SICK!

Why must religion always place women as secondary to men???

It's OFFENSIVE!

This religion is as crazy and nuts as any other cult out there.

I thought that was Dan Quayle?

I am a horrible speller. I had very involved parents, have an AA and a BA, read all the time for fun but just can't seem to "get" spelling.

I don't know about that one. Look back at this thread, or others, at some of the posts made by self-professed mormons. Look at the grammar, sentence structure, etc. The forum has an integrated spell check so if you're going by the spelling in the posts, that has to be taken with a grain of salt. We do not, however, have a grammar check. :)

well as for my spelling, i'm on a crappy laptop and the curser sticks and jumps around, s o it messes up my typing and it's so obnoxious that i don't bother to fix most of it.

I said nothing about your spelling. My point was that you (generally speaking) can't take a lack of misspelled words, on a messageboard with a spell check function, as an indication that homeschooling is better than not homeschooling (or etc.). And to a lesser degree, that lack of misspelled words does not indicate a superior education or upbringing when other assets such as grammar are not also "above average" - even if that were some kind of valid measure. (Esp. on boards with a spellcheck.)

I think BB got what I was saying. Hope.

If anything, BB was complimenting your spelling.

In the mormon religion that I belong to we are taught that we are equal to men, however, we do have different roles in the home and church. Woman are encouraged to obtain higher education, to have self respect, and to be the best woman and in a lot of cases mothers we can be. If you look on the website at what we believe about famiies you will see why having children is encouraged and important in the plan of salvation.

The fact is that it all goes back to our free agency, noone is told what to do, ever! As woman we have the right to choose wether or not to have children. I personally love my children very much and feel bad for people who choose not to have any because they will never experience that love.

Boys in the church serve a mission as the age of 19 not 15, girls are also welcome to serve one too. Boys dont' have to serve one, my husband did and says it's the best thing he has ever done for himself and others. it changed him for the better.

We can drink caffeine and soda Pop. It must be the girls parents who don't let her drink those things, personal choice i guess. i had a friend wasn't aloud to have any red candy as a kid, they were catholic I don't think it had anything to do with their religion.

FYI

Mormons donated more money and had more people volunteer than any other organization for Hurricane Katrina

Mormons on average have a much lower divorce rate

lower cancer rates

are more likely to own a home

are more educated

have their own welfare system so it's members don't have to turn to the government for help, they take good care of their members and others.

The entire church is run by volunteers, noone is paid, not bishops, missionaries, noone.

The church is debt free and teaches it's members to follow that.

the point is that Mormoms have done a lot for society and are generally very honest hardworking, family oreinted people.

Here is quote that i heard and it has stuck with me since.

"I would rather have lived my life as it were true, to find out it's not, than to live my life as if it's not to find out it was true."

I don't think mormoms pressure their beliefs on anyone, we are just living our lives the best we can and helping others on the way. WE are all just people, here on this Earth together.

Then please do explain why only men can be priests.

Thanks.

because the priesthood is something that has been passed from man to man all the way back to Adam. It was never intended for a woman to have it. God is a man and it was passed from him to Adam first.

Lower divorce rate vs. which religions/people? Your divorce rate is higher than that of Catholics, Lutherans, agnostics, atheists, all seniors, and all those in the NE US.

As for the rest, please provide your objective and neutral sources for your information.

God is a man.

How would God being a man have anything to do with whether or not women can be priests?

By nature of them not being allowed to be priests, they are held in an inferior position to men.

The first doctor was a man, but this doesn't mean women can't be doctors.

The first astronaut was a man, but this doesn't mean women can't be astronauts.

And so on and so forth.

God being a man does not, and should not equal "so women can't be priests". It does not make any logical sense as the two are not connected in a linear way in the argument.

Women can't be priests because they are held as inferior to men.

And therefore, the Mormon church views women as inferior to men.

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

      2. BlondePatriotInCDA

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
