Slower than molasses, but...

I was sleeved 6/24/14 and 8 weeks post op. I'm 63 and have been feeling down since the scale has hardly moved the past weeks. I'm down 28 pounds and just can't figure out why not losing. I knew it would slow down but expected at least 2# a week. I have a hard time getting more than 700 calories and they keep telling me I need to up the calories. I get 60-70 Protein and 48-52 oz of Water. Now walking 10,000+ steps a day. For those who are planning surgery, go for it. It was the easiest and I had sleeve, hiatal hernia and gallbladder! I think I recouped better than many of the younger ones. I'm over BP and insulin. Only take metformin and hope to be off soon. Happy with the initial 28 but anxious to get it moving again!

Hello I had my surgery when I was 53 and I had my thryoid removed to calm the effects of Graves Disease. I have lost 60 lbs and doing good. I had my surgery 5/15/2013 so I am 18 months out. I could not be happier. I do think that the weight loss is slower for us with thyroid issues

The important aspect is EXERCISE. You dont want those bat wings.

Good luck and be patient

I am 60 and doing well as far as the recovery process goes. I read about all the weight loss numbers on this site and wonder why am I going so slow. But I have reconciled myself to the fact that this may be just what is right for me. After all, I AM 60. I am not going to lose as fast as someone half my age. I do take thyroid medicine, and that may be a hindering factor. I am down below 190#s now so I will not likely see big results each week as someone who may weigh more then that. I am active enough (walking about 22,000 steps most days) but maybe not as active as others. So it is important to keep this all in perspective and keep a positive attitude on all of this as you go through YOUR journey. Love yourself for how special you are and keep the faith. We will all get there if we continue to follow the program..... Just at our own pace. :-)

:) Hello Everyone! Great messages! I really value everyones comments! JJ especially yours! I agree we are losing weight! We are going down down down not up and this is something to CELEBRATE! I'm 55 and its coming off slow too but it IS coming OFF! I see 60 years old 60+ yrs olds with such positive attitudes and I am so impressed! Keep up the good work! :D I know if I was 20 it would come off faster but hey its ok...its coming off in a healthy deliberate manner and I've learned so much. I am working my program and my sleeve and using it to get me to my dream weight. Nothing worth having is EASY so lets keep each other going. The low mood is normal after weight loss surgery but if you walk and move you WILL feel better... ;) Keep smiling and say "Just today Lord I can do this and I'm going to feel so much better" Thank you ya'll for your encouragement! :)

Here is another positive spin.... It does not take me nearly as long to blow dry my hair, since I have very little left! :-)

The surgeons in my practice have posted doing surgery on those up to age 72. I guess different surgeons have different preferences!

Carol1560, I had Graves' disease as well. Eventually I had my thyroid irradiated to kill it. My synthroid dose has been all over the place, but especially since surgery 10 weeks ago. I'm down to 125mcg and I'm feeling really fatigued with low energy. I am thinking another visit to the doc is in order. I had my tsh done about ten days ago and it was low normal.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
